I acyually say Francois and CJ were bigger gets (absolutely nothing against your Toliver suggestion) because we need a big time safety in a big way with LL gone (JD too, but I believe Steltz will be just fine). They both appear to be potential big time big playmakers.

I heard on the Jimmy Ott show that LSU was the only team in Div I to not sign a RB. Interesting, Miles did his job to offer him the best opportunity by telling him he would be the only RB recruited. A little help from JC could of helped.

Miles is a man of his word and a great leader for our team. A great example was his promise to keep the scholly offer for Breaux. I can say Miles did not have to do this for the kid who suffered the broken neck his senior year. And some coaches wouldn't. I saw the kid interview on NSD at his school and he was so happy and thanked Miles for all that he has done and said Miles kept his dream alive for him and he would never forget it. I cant wait to see what this kid can do, it could be very inspirational story in the making

Sorry, a little off topic but I am proud that Miles is our coach.

On the defensive side without question those were our 2 biggest recruits.

I was speaking about the offensive side of the ball (since the thread was implying that we have other impact players on that side of the ball we may have forgotten about).

Bottom line I would have taken Toliver over McKnight if you told me I could only have one.

Toliver sees substantial playing time as a true freshman, even with the myriad of receivers we now have. He's simply too good to redshirt.

I think I read a new post like this every day. We really do have a great coach in Miles. His character and integrity is going to keep top recruits coming year after year.

    Well said, Red! :thumb:

I was vacationing in Puerto Rico this past week, and when news that McKnight signed with USC, I immediately told my friend that I wasn't worried all that much. He couldn't understand why.

Now, not that you ever are happy to lose a recruit the caliber of McKnight, but when I told him that I strongly felt that McKnight couldn't beat out Keiland Williams and/or Alley for the starting job next season, and that we still had Scott, Richard Murphy and RJ Jackson (that later of which was said when he signed that he would be used much the same way Addai was used for us for awhile--as both a RB and lined up in the slot on occassion--which is the way McKnight will likely wind up being used). And we also have Steven Ridley entering the mix as another likely "power back"

Then, if McKnight were to play some WR, he would have to push for playing time against the likes of Doucet (whom is worlds ahead), LaFell (who is farther along than McKnight) and then try to beat out the Mitchells, Ron Brooks, TT and Ricky Dixon for playing time?? --not to mention Trindon! We have more than adequate depth at both positions that McKnight was going to see playing time at.

I would have actually been more disappointed if we were to lose, say, Jarrett Lee, or Phelon Jones or any other recruit from a position thin at depth heading into signing day.

"The key to any recruiting class is in filling the needs of your team," LSU coach Les Miles said.

Looking at it that way, No. 1-ranked tailback Joe McKnight of John Curtis High in New Orleans choosing USC over LSU is not a loss.

"We were probably not going to recruit any tailbacks if he wasn't around," Miles said. "But we wish him the best. We would've liked to have him."

Miles signed three tailbacks last season - Keiland Williams of Northside High in Lafayette via Hargrave Military Academy in Virginia, Charles Scott of Jonesboro-Hodge High in Jonesboro and Richard Murphy from Rayville High in Rayville. USC recruited both Williams and Murphy, who was red-shirted last season. Scott showed some flashes, and Williams finished the season in impressive fashion as the projected starter.

Alley Broussard also returns for his senior season, and multi-purpose back Jacob Hester will be a senior.

I respectfully disagree. While I agree that JM couldn't beat out KW for the starting job next season, he could and probably would beat out Alley Broussard b/c he is much more versatile. That's just my opinion.

Last year we battled USC for the all world 5 star RB (Williams) and won.
This year we battled USC for another all world 5 star RB (McKnight) and lost.

There are 5 star guys out there every year that are supposed to be the be all end all. Next year McKnight will just be another good USC RB and some new kid will be the must have that will change the game of college football as we know it.
