Post scrimmage interview, Miles seemed to make a point of praising Murphy and Scott, but didn't mention Williams at all. He mentioned that someone had fumbled, and then hinted later that it was a "young QB in the shotgun" - probably JJ.
Williams either wasn't playing (don't think this was the case), or was fourth string because Ridley was the 3rd RB. I've been saying it for quite a while now, but most fans don't see it. Williams is the farthest guy we have from being a complete back. He goes down on contact too easy, can't find the hole, and isn't a very good blocker. Scott has shown the greatest improvement & I think the coaches really respect the go to work attitude he shares with Hester in willing to play FB. IMO, the only way he doesn't get the most carries is if Quinn gets hurt & we need him more at FB.
I agree completely. And the thought of Quinn Johnson and Charles Scott in the backfield is pretty damn scary. I can see us having the same 3rd and 4th down sucess as last year or better with those two.
Miles has already said that we won't go for it on 4th down as often this year, but with our OL & those 2 guys - I think we're capable of it. My only concern is that Scott has a fairly upright running style, which may not be ideal for 4th down runs. I suppose it is not a big issue if he's playing FB though.
My ideal base offense has Williams at HB, Scott at FB and Murphy in the slot as a receiver. You can go anywhere from there. Fake pitch to Williams and handoff short to Scott. Fake to Scott, hand off to Williams. Pitch to Williams who hands off to Murphy on a reverse. Line up wi th two TE's and then split Dickson out as a receiver before the snap, etc. There is no limit to what you can do with this talent. No two games should be called the same.
Hopefully we won't need to go on 4th so much. I won't survive another year like the last two. I prefer we just blow folks out so I can enjoy the 4th quarters. If not Scott for short yardage, then who? KW is horrible between the tackles and Murphy is a little light to push the pile. I think Scott will be fine. Hopefully he has worked on lowering his head over the summer.
Enter Quinn Johnson... I see him as a sleeper this year who will be called on to run on 3rd and 4th and short and he has the ability to catch it out of the backfield.
Williams can run and nobody is better. He isn't effective inside because he runs into his blockers. He has to be able to find the hole, even if he has to wait for it to open. Running behind Big Herm springs you into the backfield. Running up Herman's back gets you two. This is Williams biggest limitation as far as getting yardage, but it is coachable and he needs to show improvement this season. The other issue keeping him off the field is being able to pick up the blitz and protect the QB on a pass play. Hester was great at it and stayed in the game as a result. Keiland was not so good. The RB must occasionally block for the QB or the slotback on a running play too. He is possibly the best pure running back we have, but to be a complete back and stay in the game, he needs to flatten some people blocking this year and he needs to find the hole in 3rd gear before shifting into overdrive.
Very well said. The kid just needs more coaching and patience. He's had more time learning both, so we'll see how it goes. One thing not being said is that there is a REASON KW got the majority of carries behind Hester last year. And now all of a sudden he's an afterthought? I don't think so. Look for a big year from him.
I like all of the backs, I think K.Williams just needs more focus, he will come on and be the featured back. His talent is whats needed against SEC Defenses. Not to say the other 2 dont have the talent. I think we should just throw everything we have at the defense, give them different looks. Play to each guys strenght, when calling the plays. Id like to see Murphy in the slot and Scott at FB. Thats great coaching imo and think Crowton and Miles have a patent on that.
