I remember in the 70's, 80's and early 90's, out of the top 15 players in the state, LSU would only get about half of them. All sort of schools were stealing our players, Fla. St., Fla., Bama, Texas, ND, Nebraska, Okla. In the 60's we would get 9 out of the top 10, and we were real good. Saban changed it in the late 90's, and Miles has maintained the recruiting in La. And that makes all the difference in the world. All of La., the population is smaller than the city of Houston. We MUST have the top recruits ALL go to LSU, plus get a few from Tex., Arky, Miss., Bama, Ga. and Fla. Les has been able to do what he has to in order to put a championship contender on the field. Geaux Les!!! :milesmic:
:geaux: You're absolutely right here. I think Fla. St. and Bobby Bowden were the most successful at mining La. talent, although the others you mentioned scored successes as well. All you have to do is think back to Travis Minor, Warrick Dunn, etc. The Seminoles were also especially successful in recruiting the New Orleans area for quite a long time while LSU couldn't even get a foot in the door before Saban showed up. Once Saban put the fence up around La. it made quite a difference and the fact that Coach Miles has kept the fence up will ensure continued top recruiting classes and success on the field for LSU for years to come. :LSU231:
Johnson committed VERY early. I believe he visited LSU with family recently? I don't know the kid and his family, but I'd give Les Miles a fighting shot at signing him. There are some good things being said about that visit. :hihi:
Dinardo was the one who brought the magic back. Toward the end of his tenure we were securing most of the LA talent and Saban sured it up even more.
That is a great insight that is slowly being buried under Saban lore. Although, Saban did awesome things for LSU on many other fronts, not the least of which is infrastructure, or so I'm told.
Just to expand on this, since I was 11 when the Magic Man started restocking the cupboard, wasn't Kevin Faulk's recruitment the pivotal moment for LSU keeping kids in state? Or were there some other big gets at that time that were crucial in putting that proverbial fence back up? I remember Faulk was a huge get because we were constantly losing big time RBs like Minor and Dunn, but were there any other crucial DiNardo signings during that time?
Kev Faulk was definitely the turning point. He could have went anywhere he wanted, but stayed home to play for the Vanderbilt coach.
Don't remember the exact number but I want to say Saban inherited close to 30 NFL prospects when he arrived on campus. That shows exactly how well Dinardo recruited when he was at LSU but he did not coach them up to their full ability or at least have time to.
Boy, in that light, Les Miles really got no credit at all...with all those "tiger fans" complaining about him winning with Saban's players. I guess their man crushes on Saban prevented them from realizing that Saban inherited so much talent from Dinardo in the first place. I heard all that BS from my own in-laws...and was sick of it then. I guess these are the same fans who now hate Saban. We are so lucky to have Miles as head coach.
I think that's a bit of a stretch. Would be interested to see a list of those players that got drafted.
