Now Auburn has lost 2 DC's in a row to UT. That must chap Auburn. I'd be chapped. Yes, UT has deep pockets. Austin is pretty too, maybe it was a lifestyle choice? Naw, DC's don't do that. Had to be money. The coaching salary explosion is getting outa hand... Look at all the bowl losses by Stoopes. Is he worth $3.2 mil a year? I don't think so. He got beat by the Boise St. guys just last year, guy was making maybe 1/10th what Stoopes made...
Interesting thing about this deal is the former defensive coordinator was "demoted" and will be coaching defensive backs as well as serving as assistant head coach (never have understood exactly what that is). Seems like that would be a strange or strained situation. UT OC Greg Davis is paid $353k and got a good salary bump when UT got Chizik from AU. Looks like they'll bump his salary again. That's starting to get close to $1 mil for 2 coordinators. Whew. Austin paper says Muschamp's deal is for one year, "although he may have promised to stay for at least two." Promised ? UT got a good one. To echo others' thoughts on this subject, kinda sorry to see him leave the SEC. Seems like a good guy.
I've been wondering if LSU considered WM at all. I would've liked to see him come back. Maybe he was considered and the next DC is already in line so WM went ahead and looked elsewhere. Although having a DC switch to a school in your division would be strange even though WM did it before but he did follow Saban for a year.
I can't tell you how crushed I am that we're not gonna have a shot at him. I guess it does make more sense for him to go out of conference though. And now this clouds things even more as AU will likely make a push for Tenuta...although I have liked Les' hires every time we have an opening, I am a little uneasy about what's going on and we're losing out on arguably two of the top candidates before we even get to fire a shot. Guess I'll just have to trust the Hat.
It is appearing he's taking a pay cut to move to Tx. He was going to get $425K this upcoming season at Auburn.
I don't understand why some think a leteral move is a bad thing or implies something is wrong. We all work in different worlds but I learned a long time ago that the broader your work contact network is the better off you are in terms of getting things done and getting where you want to go. Manyof you know I worked many years for NASA and retired from a pretty high level job at NASA Headquarters. Not bragging at all but I know your President, Sean O'Keefe, well and have spent many hours with him while he was the NASA Administrator. I can pick up the phone now and call him if I have a reasonable favor to ask. That kind of contact network is especailly important in the coaching profession. It doesn't hurt my ego to admit that WM will get more visibility at UT than he will at Auburn. He is well known in the southeast but not so much so elsewhere. So why shouldn't he broaden his horizons? WM earned his pay at Auburn the last two years so no Auburn fan should complain. I like WM and wish him the very best.
He was at Miami in a less than desirable position and left after only one year. Then he was at AU for only two years. It's not like he needs to make a move because he has been at AU for a long time and needs a change of pace, he is starting his 4th different job in just a little over 4 years. A lateral move and a pay cut after just 2 years with Tubby sounds very strange indeed. I would think there is much more to the story than what has been reported.
