3rd stats for JJ. i wasnt sure how to best do this. i did not count non passing attempt plays. so if he was sacked, or rushed because of hurry, or ran by design i didnt count it regardless of whether the 1st down was obtained or not.

first downs gained/3rd down pass attempt

    msu---2/7
    usl----7/8
    vandy-4/5
    uw----1/5
    14/25 = 56%

average yards needed for 1st down (again, only when pass attempted)

    211/25=8.4

not sure what this means except lsu rushes on 3rd when short gains are needed (big surprise). i suppose it says lsu never passes on short yd 3rd downs.

out of the 25 plays where passes were attempted on 3rd down 5 were under 5 yds. so in addition to not throwing downfield much (in first 3 games), i think this shows lack of confidence in qb. particularly since the rushing is not up to snuff.

remove the plays where long gains (over 10 yds) are needed and JJ is 14/20 for a cool 70%.

Our OL has not learned how to run block on a consistent basis.

    1)61% completion 141 QB rating 1 int
    That ain't it.

2)I agree that would have been a smart thing to get worked out...but it didn't happen. Not arguing with this one in theory...it just failed.

3)It's NOT all on them...but to say they've "underperformed a BIT" is being mighty generous.

4)Agree...and agree. Just wish it would've happened against the cupcakes.

5)I HOPE you're right about that. If you are, it'll be pretty.

#12 offense in the SEC, only 1 game over 200 yards passing. He's not establishing long drives, our time of possession is way low, and he has happy feet in the pocket. If Jefferson could force our opponents into nickle coverage to defend the pass, our running game would be rocking. Hasn't happened yet. Everyone stacks the line.

It's coming, but it will take Jefferson a while before he is a veteran and a steady threat to pass the ball.

Good points...but I am of the opinion that the lack of running game is why our TOP is so low.

Honestly, I guess JJ is doing exactly what I hoped HE would do. But I also hoped the running game would be our bread and butter...and I think that was a valid expectation.

Are we sure it's JJ that isn't establishing long drives? I think it's the lack of a running game.

I do agree with the happy feet part.

The last drive was about 3 yards then the punter had to run out the end zone for a safety. You’re only as good as your last show dude. I think Jefferson plays better in bigger games. I bet he has a decent game on Saturday and LSU will get the win!

It's part of it. Passing and running are intertwined. Opponents are cheating up to stop the run and Jefferson isn't making them pay for it. If they drop into nickle and dime to stop the passing game, then Scott must make them pay for it. It's up to Jefferson to earn the passing respect needed for a defense to play him honest.

I didn't expect him to be Joe Montana in game one. He's coming along about as I expected. He's got a lot of upside, but he ain't there yet. This would be a good game to show that he's improving and stepping it up. We have some fabulously talented receivers that need to see a lot leather balls today.
