I’ve definitely seen it when the offense is on the field and they are using the back up QB to signal play calls from the booth to the field, but it’s usually the 3rd string, I think (I remember McMillan doing this). I can’t recall seeing one on the bench when the Defense was on the field.
You might be right. But, I thought it was the second string guy with the headphones, and the thirds string guy with the clipboard.
My understanding about Brennan from someone near the program is that he lacks the Les Miles' "want-to". I doubt he cares enough to wear a headset. Hopefully he grows up a bit before next season.
I don't know if its the norm in college, but it certainly is in the pros. You always see the backup on the sideline holding his helmet to his ears so he can hear the play call going in. Brady would know that.
