I'm not drunk on purple koolaid, though I tend to have a positive outlook on most things. I understand that sloppy play without improvement is LSU's MO for the past two years. And I am *this* close to throwing in the towel regarding any hopes that I'll see a CLM circa 2005-2007 team (those teams played, for the most part, with discipline and cohesiveness that the last two years lacked).

But I am not ready yet...in most part because I saw real progression from last year to the game against NC. I saw improvement by JJ (though not as many strides as I'd hoped, to be sure). I saw an improved Oline who was opening holes for Ridely against what I'd suspect is a better-than-average Dline despite they're being 'depleted'. I saw LSU throw to the middle of the field and throw the long pass, and I saw Shep score two TDs. I saw receivers running better routes and blocking better. I saw an improved Dline playing against a very decent, non-depleted Oline. I saw more sacks in one game than we had in, what, four/five games last year. I saw fired up play by a blitzing defense.

Granted, I saw that in the first half. But the good I saw was better than just about anything I saw against Washington last year.

I don't know if we'll improve. As optimistic as I am, I am well aware that beyond the defense making some strides last year, the offense was stagnant throughout the season. But...I'm not going to throw in the towel quite yet. I saw enough on Saturday to make me think twice, and going into the game, I was hugely concerned about the LSU's prep considering they didn't know who exactly they'd be playing AND knowing they'd be playing a team ready to be fired up over ANYTHING if the ball bounced their way. I'm not happy with how we played in the fourth quarter and not happy overall with the second half coaching, but I'm grateful for the win, and I think I'll wait a few more games to see how we measure up before I throw my hands up and give up on the season.

Why wouldn't someone be fired up for this? It's the first game of conference play. These count.

Despite my worry about the season, I am indeed fired up for Vandy. I don't care if they're Vandy, they're an SEC team and the next chance we get to see PP7, Shep, Nevis, JJ (yes, JJ!), RR, TT, Ridley, hopefully Ford or Blue, Barksdale, Mathieu, Claiborne, Loston, Josh Downs (bearmanpig!), BARKEVIOUS MINGO!!!, Montgomery, and a host of other young, future stars take the field on Saturday. Damn right I am fired up!

I would love to hear 'It was just Vandy' come Monday.

That would mean we did our job Saturday night.

if we win 14 games this year, all of them HOW we won this game, and hoist the Crystal in January, will you still bitch and want Miles gone?

(no, I am not predicting this outcome).

i'm excited about the vandy game because I currently live in Kentucky and after 3 years of having no real chance to see LSU play I get to go to my 2nd game in as many weeks.
