#2 is a wash with me. The data will be posted on a website that no one will visit or use. I don't expect anything to change in the relationship between physicians and hawt 20-something pharmaceutical rep.

I really don't have that big of an issue with any of them. The abstinence thing is pointless and will probably lead to an increase in STDs among our youth, but it's probably thrown in there to get some close-minded conservative Republican or Democrat to agree with something else in the bill. At this point, $250 million isn't going to sink this country and it wouldn't probably show up in another bill somewhere down the line anyway.

so you don't think number 2 will help with the pharm reps cutting doctors checks for writing scripts? Lets say you work for the company who makes the drug Pristiq. You visit doctors and the more those doctors write scripts for Pristiq the more money they make due to kickbacks. So now you have a ton of people on this drug who really don't need to be. To me, that is a problem. It's never about preventative help, its always about patching you up, and waiting for you to break down again to squeeze you some more, like that dirty mechanic that lives in your town.

What's the incentive to stop? To avoid having your name and the gifts you've given to physicians posted on the internet?

    - OR -

Keep on dishing out gifts and ringing up that commission?

I don't see it changing because of #2. If you want it to change, hold back some of that government money from hospitals who allow physicians to accept sych gifts. That of course doesn't stop physicians who are not an employee of the hospitals, but it throws a big dent in things. Perhaps that would be enough to no longer justify the cost of having someone go around and spread the word about Cialis on pens, notepads and golf weekends.

new york has had the mandatory restaurant calorie counts for a while. i like it, but some small businesses have been pretty pissed about having to spend thousands on getting their food sent to labs and calories analyzed. so i dont like the law, even though it benefits me personally. i dont like getting the government on my side and forcing businesses to bend to my will. if they want to post calories they can. and if some places dont want to post them, then i can avoid those places or just eat without caring. no government necessary.

This is just a business opportunity for someone to establish an business that can efficiently and affordably provide calorie counts for small businesses. And if that guy is on NASDAQ, I'll buy him.

a business opportunity for some, but a real drag for the mom and pop pizza place that doesnt need any extra expense. every dollar these labs make is one less dollar made by the food seller or food buyer.

to be fair, the new york law only requires you to have calorie counts if you have over some amount of franchises, like 8 or something.

there is a local queens pizza chain that barely had enough to require calorie counts and they were pretty pissed.

if people want calorie counts, they can pretty much figure it out. a cheeseburger has lots of calories, so does sausage pizza. steamed broccoli has few calories. dont really need to burden the restaurant to provide that. i cant really get caught by surprise.

another example of government stepping in when i can manage it quite easily myself.

Likewise, I think the small restaurants could manage calorie counts pretty easily, too. They'd just rather not do it, so they lobby against it. They 'd rather not have health inspectors come around either.

And you must acknowledge that there are an awful lot of calorie counters out there these days and they should be, Americans are too fat and greedy American restaurants crank out high-calorie food in huge portions that astonish Europeans and Asians. But the franchises that can spend money on advertising a 1500 calorie sandwich or a 1700 calorie milkshake can spend the money to tell people what they really are getting.

Chili cheese fries are tasty and people should eat about five fries. Of course, the fern bars serve them in huge bowls as individual appetizers and a person should know that he's getting an entire 2,200 calorie daily in take in one appetizer. He ought to at least be able to look it up if he gives a chit.

if you need a calorie counter to tell you that cheese fries are calorie monsters, then i think the problem is with you, not the restaurant, not the government.

plan: look at belly, if it is fat, eat less and eat more plants. if it is skinny or you dont give a damn, eat cheese fries. government not needed.

my plan just saved a ton of effort by government and small business.

what about a 700 calorie turkey club. The Super Loaded ******* Explosion Texas Curly Chili Cheese Fries aren't the problem, its the stuff that is disguised as health food that is the problem.

I'm going w/ Martin on this. It's just big brother sticking his nose where it doesn't belong. If you must know the calorie count, go to one of the restaurants that provide it. It can be a selling feature for them.
