Being it's a school activity it seems like the powers that be have jurisdiction and could ticket students using foul language in band songs. They wouldn't let 'em talk like that in classrooms, school activities are just an extension of the classroom, in essence.
The logistics would be daunting since you would have to issue thousands of tickets. A better solution would be to appeal to the the ones with sensibilities to chastise the immature ones. There are many who disapprove of the action. Stand up and fight...
Yeah I thought of that but at, say, $100.00 a pop it may not take too many tickets to shut 'em up. The personnel needed to monitor would be another issue then the "I didn't curse" crap that would ensue. Would almost need some kind of video evidence the way people fight everything these days. I do like your idea much better but apparently we're lacking in the "ones with sensibilities" dep't and in fairness to them, most people don't care to call out others in public outside of fear from the obvious.
First, I am not one of those moronic students who chanted foul language in the band's song and I hate that as much as you do. I love that song sooooo much simply because I love that old tune and the enthusiasm it brings to a football game. You have no right to condemn another person based on your own prejudgment and I hope you can apologize to me! Second, except for the prejudgment thing you did to me, I do agree with what you said about those teenagers and they need to stop chanting the vulgar words right now or another song will be killed otherwise.
The reason I referred to that "oh A oh" song as "you suck" is because I am a new student to LSU and that was what I heard as soon as I went to the first game and thus I had no idea what it was supposed to be called or any of its history. But I think you are right. When new students step into tiger stadium, the first thing they will hear is not the history or introduction about their band's songs but the vulgar words. This will mislead them to believe chanting vulgar words is some kind of a tradition and is what it is supposed to be, which is so pathetic.
Thorny is correct. It's not trying to take the "fun" away from the students. It is the fact that it appears Tiger Band is leading a vulgar cheer. I remember my final year, 2004, being the last time the full Tiger Rag was played in Tiger Stadium. It was only played in Pregame for the exact reason of the Students chant. My place was in the U and we played the song when we changed the U to L and the chant was so loud it was hard to hear the band over it. I clearly heard on National Television the new lyric to Neck and fully support Roy King's and the Band Departments stance to remove the song. It makes LSU look bad.
I loved it when the Band played Neck twice in the Bama game! I felt that it was a part of the history of LSU, and I'd have been really disappointed if they didn't play it! Was part of an outrageous weekend for me at LSU! Those losers who could not metabolize their alcohol properly were mouthing the usual bastardized words, effectively killing Neck for the next games...A$$clowns! But, (I said to myself), these losers are, in fact, college students! Doesn't excuse, but goes a long way to explain.......The a$$clown a few rows behind me (I sat in the student section with my daughter even though I had killer seats from TicketCity) launched his soda + container. I wanted so much to take the puppy down, but, as on the playing field, it's the SECOND guy who draws the flag...and the aforementioned a$$clown was pushed over onto his a$$ by one of his more intelligent--though still a knuckle-dragger--bros. Is there Cosmic Justice?
Overall the behavior in the student section isn't bad. There are instances that require attention but generally it's a few that spoil it for everyone. When I 1st started working the student section the cup throwing was out of hand. Once they began video taping and punishing students with suspension from games it dropped off considerably. I've only had to have one person escorted out this season where a few years ago it was at least 2 a game. The bastardizing of the song chants could be punished the same way by revoking game rights but it would be unfair to punish the few within earshot of a monitor when an entire section may be doing it. vesperiaLSU---to be fair to Herb it was kind of hard to read your attitude in this post. Reading it one way I thought you were making light of this to get a rise out of the people who are against vulgar chants. I didn't comment because I didn't want to judge harshly without knowing your real intent. It's great you see the reasons why so many of your fellow adults are upset with the way some of the immature chose to act.
