Why didn't LSU try harder to score the last TD?

I do understand "running up the score" is not a cool thing to do, but wouldn't it help in the BCS calculations to add as many points possible?

Izzie could answer better than me, but I don't think it would have made a big difference in the computers.

Reverse the roles and the Old Ball Coach would have hung 7 on us.

No. That formula was last used in 2003 (polls of the writers and coaches, computer rankings, schedule strength and team record). Since 2004, SOS, margin of victory, etc. are no longer used in the BCS formula. They are used in many computer polls, though. The computer polls are averaged together with the highest and lowest ranking dropped. Then the two human polls are averaged with the one computer poll average for the BCS ranking.

In other words, things like margin of victory and strength of schedule are a small part of a small part of one third of the BCS Poll. Perception in the human poll matters more than anything.

That's exactly what I was saying at the time. I was thinking that he had it coming, and probably expected Les to punch it in. Karma at work, yunno? But I guess this way it kind of turns out like the very end of The Karate Kid, when Mr. Miyagi is about to bust that sensei's nose but just ends up squeezing it and making that honking sound. Sometimes it's better to have your opponent know that you could just bury them but you still choose not to.

I don't think Les Miles really cared THAT much about it....he tried twice, probably more of a reward to Keiland than a BCS ratings grab....Basically said "all right Keiland, if you want a TD, here's your chance"....once he was stopped twice there was really no point.

A 1 yard TD with less than 20 seconds to play is more than running up the score, it's extending the game unnecessarily...Plus, if we get stopped when we're actually trying to score, it hurts the pysche of the football team. By saying, "ah, we don't need that TD, let's go home boys", you ensure the game ends on a positive note.

We'd just look foolish, IMO, trying to tack on such an obvious garbage time touchdown with such little time left...I could see if there was like a minute left, but it was down to the last :20 after KW got stopped on 2nd down, to try to get another play off there would've been bad form

And yes, I realize Spurrier has routinely hung 50 on LSU and many other SEC opponents on the strength of WR reverse passes and flea-flickers being called in 4th qtr. blowouts, but that doesn't mean a thing to Les Miles or our football team.

Beating that son-of-a-gun is satisfying no matter the score. 24-17 tastes just as sweet as a 31-17

I thought the AP poll didn't go into the BCS?

I agree, in a college football world with no playoff, style points matter.

It still matters in the minds of the voters and the media perception.

the style points when out the window in Gainesville. So did contending for the National Championship, at least for now. Best for all of us to put it out of mind.

All we're trying to do is win the SEC West right now, and there are no style points involved in that one.

2 wins and we're in. Georgia and Bama. That is our season. I don't care how stylishly we do it. We can win em both 2-0 for all I care, let's just get the Ws.
