Plus, if you hire a LSU guy and it doesn't work out, it makes it that much harder to fire him cause he's part of the family. You might hold onto him a season or two longer than you would with somebody else.

I'm talking about getting a guy who is not looking for another job...someone not necessarily from LSU but will be a LSU guy. Saban wanted the NFL, Miles wants Michigan. I really understand why they both would want what they want.

You don't see the coaches at the other top schools looking i.e. Pete Carroll, Charlie Weis, Joe Pa, Frank Beamer, etc.

But saban and Miles both did VERY well at LSU! . Would you give up our trophy in 03 to still have the same coach here? Our coaches were WANTED because of the success they achieved here. I'd rather keep our successful coach a long time, but I would take our record since 2000 and go looking for the next coach before I'd have accepted less success. I'm good with it.

That pic of Bill Cowher in LSU gear circulating on email right now makes for interesting conversation.

I agree on Callahan but the guy was run out of Oakland before Nebraska hired him. I think Nebraska just wanted an NFL coach....anybody and they picked one who was questionable to start with.

Mainly I was talking about going and trying to find the next Sean Payton......a young coordinator with a good mind like the offensive coordinator from the Cowboy's, Jason Garrett. I would at least talk to the guy. Maybe Gary Gibbs from the Saints. I think either one of those guys is a legitimate interview. But whatever happens, I think this time (just like I thought last time) that LSU has never been in a better position to go get their dream coach.....whoever that is. If it's Spurrier, then damnit, go get him. Find out what it would take and pursue the guy with $$$$ in hand. Rather that then interview people and rely on a Joe Dean-like gut feeling.

Coaches want to be pursued. They may tell you 'no' to start with but if you want the guy make him tell you 'leave me alone.' It's my impression that LSU waits for coaches to contact them......that's not how it works with good coaches. Auburn wanted Petrino......did they wait for Petrino to contact them? Hell no....he has a job. They got a plane and talked to him.....he was their guy. (They handled it wrong by getting caught) There's ways to do this without looking like Auburn though.

If Les leaves, then Petrino would also be on the list. IMO, Petrino covets LSU as a good job capable of winning championships.

Skip already passed on Petrino after his interview last time. I doubt he would even be considered.

Red, any idea why he passed on him?

I thought word got out in Louisville he was looking at LSU and fans, alumni and administration were mad about him always looking at other jobs so Petrino killed it himself. I remember him coming out and apologizing and all that stuff and saying he was happy where he was.

    What he said.

Jack may not have said this publicly, but it doesn't take much to figure it out.

He's already an NFL coach, so no risk of losing him to the pros. He's also had dozens of "good" college jobs come open during his tenure in Jacksonville...yet LSU is the only job he's pursued (semi) publicly. Not Florida, not Notre Dame, not anybody else.

    Just LSU.

He has strong Louisiana ties, and he's a young coach. He has "want to coach at LSU for 20 years--and nowhere else--and leave a legend" written all over his resume, if you ask me.
