I agree with Purple Tiger and Tigseurs for the most part. JL deserved a second chance even though I didn't want him back in after the first INT. I believe we tried to run the ball up the middle after running the option because we didn't want to become to predictable. We can't just run the option every play. Had to keep the Bama offense somewhat honest. JJ got nailed when we ran the option to open up the second half and Ford got no yardage. They defensed it a little better than the first half. I don't think this game is a let down at all. To win this game like we did with very little offensive movement says a lot about this team. The defense was amazing especially the second half just like all year. Be Happy, be proud everyone, it wasn't pretty and neither was Gladiator. This game was between 2 Gladiators. Our offense and JL I suspect will be fine from here on out, We need JL, JJ seems to be limited. This system has worked all year. JL had a bad game but so what, So did Tom Brady a few weeks ago. JL deserves another shot. All of this talk, you all have to remember we have a new offensive coordinator who I believe has done a fantastic job this year, give him a break, he will only get better also in time. I am very HAPPY for the win especially because we weren't at our best as far as penalties and offense.
I dont at all blame Miles for putting Lee back in. It was one mistake and he earned his shot. That said, after the second throw he deserved to ride the pine. I just think we looked like we did last year with JJ in at QB. Its like you already know whats coming. Its revisiting the last two or three years of poor play calling. With JJ in there you know whats coming. With Lee there is the threat of a deep pass on first down. I also HATED the third down run on the final drive in regulation. Its third and 4 or 5 and you run a FN sweep. Im all for playing to win. Many times you get caught when you try to be too conservative. I know there is a thread for it, but Id like to see Mett get a series in a big game. He is the best passer on the team.
Its funny that Robert Smith complemented LSU's playcalling for winning the game and people are complaining.
I'm not complaining about anything after this win. We just beat the best team we'll play this year. I dont care how we had to do it.
It was entirely predictable. He's been underutilized pretty much all year. The worst play calling of the night, IMO, was three straight Ware runs on LSU's last drive in regulation, long after it had been made clear that Ford was the better option.
For the first time in my life, I was actually hoping to see MORE of the option, especially near the goal line at the end of the first half. bama played it right a few times, but we were breaking off big chunks for the most part and really wearing down their LBs. Oh, well. I certainly ain't complaining. Was just surprised to see us not do more of what was working. Did anyone else hear Lea say he thought we'd score 35-40pts? I thought that was funny. He must read this forum.
OK .. after coffee .. brain works better. I don't disagree ... I'm a complete homer for JL. I wanted him back in the game, but I wanted Studs/Krags to call higher percentage plays to allow him to build up some momentum. Comming out and throwing a 20 yrd pass down field to the TE in double coverage off a bad snap was not a good way to start back. I have to give Bama's Defense some credit as well .. they are just plain darn good. We showed the world that yes, you CAN run on them, we racked up 148 yrds rushing on them .. they only got 96 on LSU's Bend but don't break D. But I think we could have racked a lot more pass yards with the right plays. The overwhelming majority of Bama's pass yards were after the catch yrds for Richardson off the screen. Anyway ... didn't matter .. we got the W .. thanks to our D and Saban's rediculous tendency to try and kick FG's when he should have been punting. I mean ... 52 yrds, 50 yrds, 49 yrds .... heck, most punts don't go for that yardage, let alone FGs. Saban got outcoached, IMO.
But you still have to run in between the tackles to keep the defense honest make them play from the inside out....thats what opened up the option plays.
LSU did what they needed to do for this particular game. I'm sure they wanted to open it up a bit more, but against Bama's defense that's no easy task. However, LSU adapted and played smash mouth old school ball. They did it well enough to make CNS to step out of his normal decision making box and make crucial mistakes (the Maze trickery, allowing Maze to field a punt with one foot, electing to try for FG's he knew they wouldn't make rather than pinning LSU deep in their own territory with a punt).. Miles remained calm and cool, and Saban got rattled, gambled, and lost... ballgame. People and the media all over the country will continue to take shots at Miles and LSU in the future because of what they see as an ugly game and close win. But, once again one of the nation's top tier coaches, of the #2 team in the land no less, walked off the field (at home) scratching his head and wondering how the hell he lost to the Mad Hatter and company. :miles:
Your analysis is spot on. CLM made the intelligent adjustment. He owes nobody a trick play if we can succeed by grinding the game down to a near-defensive stalemate, then a surgical field goal. "Great teams find a way to win"
