Brockers on D. If the tackles can stop the inside run, we can handle Alabama. Shepard on O. He's the kind of speedy, shifty back that can leave a 260 pound All-American linebacker behind on inside passes and reverses.
This is his game. He and Jefferson have gotten limited playing time and Bama has limited video on them. Both have big-play potential, especially when they are both in the game, as I expect we will see. Bama has a couple of big aggressive linebackers that are run-stoppers deluxe. But neither of them can cover Shepard one-on-one. I expect Studthorpe to arrange this mismatch with Shepard in the pistol formation and in the slot.
He's been on Shepard for a bit now, and in a lot of ways deservedly so. The kid's been ballin lately. That said, the speedy back that will get enough touches to get an MVP award thrown his way is going to be Ford.
If Bama puts one of their 265 lb middle linebackers on Shepard, then Saban is more stupid than anyone realized. Now one of the 240 lb outside speedy linebackers, yeah. Ultimately, Shepard still has the advantage.
Shepard has not been the answer in the three seasons he has played. When he first came to LSU, most of the reports fans heard made him sound like he was going to really have a big impact on LSU's fortunes. Perhaps we, the fans, expected too much based on the hype. Shepard unfortunately has turned out to be an average player, who has perhaps 4 or 5 breakout plays a year, and the rest of the season is ho-hum. Other players consistently catch the football and run better than he has so far.
