maybe you can call my wife and explain the AP voting vs the Coaches Poll. I think she got it yesterday after a few expletives I directed towards espn. But seriously this doesnt surprise me, I wouldnt put much faith in the voting right now after 1 game. Its a long season.
Correct-a-mundo. It's not that USC is #1 it's that the media is so damn eager to move them up. UGA had their "cupcake" and USC had their BCS road opponent on the schedule before the pre season rankings. IMO what went down was that the pollsters figured Georgia would put an impressive whuppin on GSU and USC would "struggle" with either an injured Sanchez or a green backup. Forget that UGA could have done what they wanted with their 1st team, the idiots saw the UCS-Va score and couldn't hold it in. Consider their week 2 votes as a pre-mature ejaculation.
In 10 days, there will be a little more room at the top of the poll. I think the SEC benefits from a similar bias (I know that's a whole different discussion, but no doubt SEC teams get the benefit of the doubt against anyone but USC), but USC is obviously the media sweetheart. They're obviously hyping the game on the 13th, and probably think it's ok because either USC wins and justifies that ranking, or OSU beats them thumb, and USC drops, so the thinking is no harm, no foul. Not sure whether I agree with that, but I suppose our opinions aren't the ones that count in this instance.
I'm not real concerned about rankings at this point. For me, it' way too early. The season will sort itself out. Look at the teams ranked in the top 7/8. They are going to play each other which will give some kind of pecking order/ assist to the pollsters. After 1 game, I am not sure who the Top 10 teams are, let alone who's #1. Maybe I'll have something after we've all played 3 or 4 games. :crystal::geaux::crystal::geaux::crystal:
I do have to hand it to USC for one thing. They do schedule mid to bottom tier teams from BCS conferences, so when they destroy them, it looks a lot better than a win from a directional or I-AA (FSC now?). That, and the fact that they (USC) played their starters alot longer than Georgia are why this happened. But like SabanFan basically said, being ranked No.1 early is irrelevant. I like the fact the Richt (and Miles too) gave their 2nd and 3rd string teams playing time. That game experience will help their depth later in the year.
