If those rumors are true, Montgomery would fit within my mold of an ex-NBA but respected college coach to come coach in the SEC. Built his rep for getting more out of Stanford teams than expected, but wasn't super successful at the Warriors. Nevertheless, think "smarter" but more "west coast" Tim Floyd.

Definitely worth considering if he's in the market. But, I agree, not necessarily suited for the South. Although, I like the Basketball acumen and respectability factor. He would bring a certain kind of player to LSU, i.e., more cerebral players and could he marry that with the athletic kids of the south?

Long shot I think, but nice to talk about. Like Montgomery, another west coast guy that I've liked, but seems to not be in the discussions too much any more is Dick Bennett (wife is from Baton Rouge), the coach from WSU. I also really like Sean Miller out of Xavier, but just realized he recently signed a long term contract that keeps him at Xavier until like 2015. Great coach, but not sure he wants to leave. I might actually take him over Grant given the proven track record, but Grant brings a lot to the table also.

I agree that Grant is the frontrunner, b/c LSU will be the plum SEC head coaching vacancy this year and, Grant is a SEC guy. But, if Butch goes far in the tourney, I think he gets more serious consideration... if he wins it all, the job's his.
