LSU is running away in a rout, Jefferson has had a career game, and it's time to bring in the backup for mop-up duty. Who comes in? Do you give reps to the #2 guy, Jarrett Lee, who, at least for this season, is the best backup option on the team should Jefferson go down, or do you bring in Chris Garret, the #3 and heir apparent to the position? It is unlikely that Lee will ever be the full time starter, and these early reps in Garrett's career could pay huge dividends at some point in the future. On the other hand, if Jefferson does go down this season, heaven forbid, getting Lee those reps could be valuable for winning now. What do you do?
Thats a dam good question. Hopefully the game would be out of hand early enough that both could get reps. Thats just a best game scenario. But I would have to say whoever is your true #2 should get the reps just incase JJ does go down.
I voted Chris Garrett myself, but I'm torn. I don't want to be in the same position we've been in for the last couple of years where we have had to go with inexperience at QB again. At the same time, the actual backup needs as many meaningful game reps as he can get should he be needed. I'm kind of like LaSalle, though. Get Garrett as much time as you can.
I hope Garrett gets alot of time myself, If he is good, which I suspect he is pretty good then we need to show recruits that we have QBs of the future.
That's the answer. It's not like we have a seasoned veteran in the #2 slot. Who ever stands at #2 will need the reps. You would like it to be one of the young guys so they are more prepared for the future, but the competition will decide who is second.
Primary mop-up duty should go to Lee this season. Garrett is simply not ready to step into a situation where he has to take over for an injured Jefferson and possibly start, and given all the team has gone through at the QB position the last couple of years, I'd think the coaches would be extremely reluctant to put yet another freshman at the helm with no game experience. That leaves Lee, who desperately needs to gain some confidence after last season, and that only comes from quality reps and PT as the backup. It's highly unlikely Jefferson declares for the draft after this season anyway, so he'll likely be the 2011 starter. Then whoever earns the #2 spot gets backup duty, and right now that's more likely to be Garrett. He'll have his opportunity, just not this year. I'd like to see Garrett get some quality minutes this year, too, but we'd have to be up big going to the 4th with Lee already taking the reigns for a few series.
Is the question who do we think should or who do we think will? Personally, I think Miles should make a decision between J.Lee or Jefferson after fall camp. Then, start getting Garrett or Z.Lee (if he doesn't go to MLB) as many reps as possible when opportunities arise. What I think will happen is JJ will start and J.Lee gets mop up.
Mop Up duty shpuld be used to develop young QBs. I think we know what J. Leecan do. I think he has reached his ceiling. I think blow out duties should be assigned to CG. Based on how well he does, he may pass Lee for the number 2 spot.
