OK, there have been lots of posts and threads about the way this season and each individual game this season has been mismanaged in crucial situations this season. Most of us, excluding a few idiots would agree that while we are football fans who pretty well understand the way the game of football is played and that certain game situations require a coaching response that will result in a positive outcome, but that few of us would be qualified to actually be the head coach.

Like most of you, I have watched thousands of football games in my life. Just like the rest of you, I understand all the basic things like how to manage the clock and what to do when you have a game winning opportunity late in the game and depending upon whether you have to go for the touchdown or whether a field goal will win it and what needs to be done depending on the down, the field position and the time on the clock.

In all the games I have watched it is amazing to me how coaches who are paid lots of money and who these facts should be second nature to them continue to make major mistakes. Its not only Les Miles in the Ole Miss game and to some extent in the Cap One Bowl, Mac Brown, another coach with a National Championship under his belt almost blew a chance at playing for another. Only a video replay that put one second back on the clock saved him from being run out of Austin.

Fellow TF posters, you have watch lots of games and you know these things as well as I do. Why don't even highly respected and previously successful coaches know and act upon theses same situations to the advantage of their team's chances of winning?

    The answer is:

Fans watch games and coaches watch film.

Coaches spend 16 to 18 hours a day coaching, recruiting and watching film. I'm sure that most decent coaches know a lot more about blocking schemes, zone vs man to man coverage, and all the technicalities of designing offensive and defensive plays designed to take advantage of specific situations that their opposition may present them with than most football fans.

But while I might watch 9 or 10 football games per week during the peak of the season, coaches watch only one game from the different perspective of the sidelines and the press box. They only watch the game they are playing. I'm about the same age as Les Miles but I would be willing to bet that I have watched a hell of a lot more football games on TV, both at all levels of college football as well as NFL games than he has.

I propose that Coach Miles should interview some of us very experienced football fans and hire one of us as the Game Situation and Clock management Coordinator. I would be willing to take the job for the 2010 season free of charge. If, after the season it turns out that my contributions were of value in winning close games then I want a contract and a decent salary

Like someone said earlier, a 12 year old boy who's good at Madden Playstation3 would be able to tell Miles when to call time out or to tell Crowton not to call a 4 yard dump pass over the middle with no time outs left when you're down by 2 !!!!

The 12 year old would be able to speak more clearly at the press conferences too...

....or as Miles himself would say, "The situational position following the game and the, to be honest with you, want to communicate football allows us the chance to take advantage of 12 year old Madden boy opportunities and situations in the post game environment." :)

Coaches do not watch 1 game over and over.... Even we high school coaches watch at least 4 games a week... As an assistant I watched our previous game, the next opponents games (usually 3 or more), and usually attended a district game on our off-night (typically Thursdays).

Any coach who has been around as long as Miles should not be making the game management mistakes that he has. There is a simple solution... Make an assistant in charge of clock management. But head coaches do not like to cede any of their authority to assistants... If nothing else, head coaches are huge ecomaniacs...

when it's all said in done, we are fans, and he coaches the team we all love. No matter what, he controls our entire team from recruiting, gameplans and who coaches our players. sure, he's made mistakes, but in the heat of the battle, it's like a chess match out there. One wrong move and you'll get killed. I'm not out of Mile's corner just yet. I just feel our offense was held back a bit more because of a young Qb and an O Line that hasn't really came together. JJ will get better, give him time, but it's hard for a young QB to feel comfortable when he is constantly pressured.
