i'll commend john on his avatar before saying that... '03 i was more emotional '07 was greater because we had high expecatations and met those expectations. (also the roller coaster year) usually greatness at LSU esp. in football and basketball happened when we came out of nowhere, but teams that were expected to do great had not (historically). this team took home a championship despite that and is reshaping the identity of LSU "not handling success well"
Oh man. This one was so much better. Throw in the fact that I was living in Columbus, OH for 3 months and my EX is a huge OSU bucknut. The victory felt good twice over.
This one is better for me cuz Miles chose LSU over his dream job of a lifetime. I just want a coach who wants us. Les, you're my hero.
03 after losing to Kansas St, many were saying OU would handle LSU. this year, LSU was expected to win. now, if youre talking about the entire year, then its 07. tougher oppts and tons of close games.
Asking this question is like asking me which of my two daughters I love more. I can't answer that about my daughters because although they are very different from each other, their unique qualities just contribute to why I love them so much in the first place. The same can be said of these two teams/championships. Honestly, Saban has soured some of the pleasure of the '03 championship by having his '04 team very flat all year, then leaving us at the end of that season. Also, Clayton and Mauck elected to go pro (good moves, guys, by the way...) Now, we don't know yet if any of our juniors will go pro, but initial indications are that they just might not. Also, our COACH chose US and isn't going someplace else--that lends some security to our program. We could've cemented our place as an elite team in '04 with a strong campaign, but we didn't. Les Miles has built us up to where we are now. I've even heard the word "dynasty" used in the same sentence as LSU. So, now that I've written it all out, I guess the '07 NC is a little better for me--though I was probably a little more elated after the '03 one. This year, I just feel confident. Don't ask me which daughter I love more!
To help put things in perspective, here is what I just wrote on another thread here: [This is] the first time LSU has been the Undisputed National Champions in half a century. Think of all your years as a Tiger fan, how much pride we've always taken in remembering the Billy Cannon-led Tigers and their Chinese Bandit defense. We still wear the white home jerseys that they wore (same jersey stripes and everything), we play the Chinese Bandit song to honor our defenses of today, we still have the same H-style posts in Tiger stadium that we had during the Billy Cannon years, and we have the crossbar from the one of field goal posts we used on the field during the 1958 season hanging above the LSU players' entrance to Tiger Stadium (the tradition is for every LSU player to touch that 1958 crossbar before going onto the field, much like ND players touch the "Play Like a Champion Today" sign before they enter their field). In all my years as a Tiger fan, I've always dreamed about having another team as great as the 1958 team. The 2003 team wasn't even close. They never finished #1 in any poll at any point during the regular season (whereas the 1958 Tigers spent 5 weeks of the regular season ranked at #1), and they would have never finished #1 in any poll at the end of the season had the Coaches Poll not previously agreed to award their crystal Coaches Trophy to the winner of the BCS game, which, unfortunately was a joke that year, with #2 LSU getting stuck with #3 Oklahoma (who had just gotten blown out by Kansas St the game before) instead of #1 USC. And speaking of the crystal Coaches Trophy, LSU is not the first two-time winner of the crystal. The Coaches Poll has awarded that same crystal trophy to every winner of their final poll since 1986. Miami has won the crystal trophy three times. In the SEC, Florida has won the crystal trophy twice. Florida State has also won it twice. Go to visit their campuses and see for yourself. Like I said, in all my years as a Tiger fan, I've always dreamed about having another team as great as the 1958 team. That finally happened with the 2007 Tigers. The 2007 Tigers were the first Tiger team since 1959 to be ranked #1 during the regular season, and they spent four weeks at #1. At the end of the season, the 2007 Tiger played in a real championship game, with every human poll agreeing that Ohio State was #1 and LSU was #2. Finally, finally, finally, LSU has had a team as great as the 1958 Tigers!!!!! FINALLY!!!!!! I look forward to seeing equally-great Tiger teams in the future!!!!!!!
Interesting points. As for myself, I was certain that 2003 Oklahoma was overrated. I wasn't surprised at all when they got absolutely beat down like little girls by a decent Kansas St. team in the Big 12 Championship. I was 100% certain that LSU would crush Oklahoma in the Sugar. I wasn't surprised when Oklahoma didn't even put up a fight in the "championship" game against LSU in the Sugar. LSU had 312 total yards, Oklahoma had 154 yards (and LSU turned the ball over 3 times, while Oklahoma only turned the ball over twice). Oklahoma showed that they didn't even belong in that game. #1 USC is the team we should have played, not #3 Oklahoma. Because we never beat #1 USC, the Trojans split the championship with us fair and square. As for myself, I thought 2007 Ohio State was way underrated by the average Joe. I'm on record saying there was no way in hell we would absolutely dominate Ohio State like we did to Oklahoma. Oklahoma 2003 was a joke, Ohio State 2007 was for real. I wasn't surprised that Ohio State had 353 yards, while LSU only had 326. Fortunately, all the crucial moments went in LSU's favor (7 penalties, 2 interceptions, 1 fumble, 5 sacks, and one blocked FG).
I went to both NCG's. The 03 was much better for me. My first year at LSU we won 3 games, and I was one of those idiots who stayed the whole time and cheered when we got that last meaningless TD. I never thought I would see the Tigers rise to such heights. 03 was incredible to me, because it was the first in such a long time. 07 is incredible in its own right. The comebacks against FL, AU, Bama, and TN;and just to get in after the loss to ARK is just amazing. 01 SECCG and Sugarbowl started it, 03 NC put us on the map, and 07 NC made us the team of the decade, I just hope we can keep it going. I believe we will make a great run for the NC in 09! GEAUX TIGERS!
