You would get a true idea of how good a coach he really is when there are limited resources.

This would hold true for a very many of today's "upper echelon" which is why I hold Bill Snyder in such high regard. He has done one hell of a job at K State of all places, not exactly the juggernaut powerhouse of CFB. Yet he wins. I'm not sure, in fact I would bet solid money that saban, miles, Meyer etc. could not duplicate his success there.

I know one thing, when it comes to Miles and Saban winning, Miles is going to beat Saban this year. That's right I'm calling it now. I doubt we leave both Auburn and Gainesville with W's but for Alabama, we're going to derail that effin train this year. Going to be some fappin goin on around Tiger Stadium when the final second runs off the clock on that one.

I have been all over the board with Les Miles. At the end of the day the man is an incredible recruiter, by most accounts a tremendous man and I would say he is a very good coach. Not great, but very good. The unfortunate thing for Les is he will always be compared to Satan who is, like him or hate him, the best coach and recruiter in college football. Les very well could be one of the top 5 coaches in the country but he will continue to fight against the little fella over at Bama.

So to answer the question, I'd now say I'm a Miles supporter. It took so long to get here. That said, I'm confident Michigan will come after him harder this time and I think he will be primed to leave coming off of what I think could be an 8-4 type season because of the most important position on the field.

I've said this before about a few schools, most of their problems, are off the field. Les knows what he has at LSU. Why try to start over with a college that has internal problems. He has everything he wants here. Ever spend a Winter there? I know one player from here in Tx couldn't wait to return. Les likes what he has at OC, DC and the rest of his staff. What can they offer?

ALL good coaches get better jobs than that with more resources. A lot of them do start out at smaller programs. Saban at Toledo, Urban Meyer at Bowling Green, ect. By the time they get to an LSU or Alabama or an Ohio State they have already proven they are very good coaches. Its like paying your dues in the minor leagues and working your way up.

Les was ok at OSU, and Nick was good at Toledo and ok
    at MSU.

How good would Les or Nick be at a Duke, or Indiana? That would be a true test. What's the guy at Sparty now? He's done more in 1 season than Saban ever did. And he had to beat an Urban Meyer team that hadn't been beaten in 20 something games.

Mark Dantonio is 64-29 in 7 years at Michigan State. Not bad but I'm sure his record and recruiting have been enhanced by the demise of rival Michigan during that period. Prior to that Dantonio was an assistant under Saban and Bobby Williams.

I don't know if anybody could win at Indiana. Cam Cameron had a miserable record there. They are like Kentucky. They put more money into basketball than football. David Cutcliffe has done a good job at Duke. He is a good coach and I think he was unjustly fired at Ole Miss. The last coach to win anything at Duke was Steve Spurrier and it got him the Florida job. Most coaches with Cutcliffe's ability have jobs at more traditional football powers. He has been overlooked for some reason.

When you talk about a true test coaches like Les, Saban, Meyer, Spurrier, Bob Stoops, Jimbo Fisher, ect. have already passed that true test with flying colors whether they were small college head coaches or whether they were coordinators like Stoops or Fisher or Gus Malzahn who got big jobs based on their performance. The only way a big time coach would go back to a Bowling Green or a Duke would be if they lost too many games or if they screwed up like Bobby Petrino and were lucky to get any job at all. Petrino only spent one year at Western Kentucky and it won't be long before he makes Louisville a contender in the ACC.

Doubt Nick would be good at Duke...smart guys would not be "processed" easily. Hard to tell about Les at Duke his personality would work but I'm not sure his approach to the game would fit.

Mark D'Antonio (sp?) show what a real plugger can do. Nick didn't have the patience to do the same.

What about Dennis Erickson, where is he now? Butch Davis? Those guys were major and when they tried to coach somewhere without resources, yeah not so much.
