Schools can go from one extreme to another, look at Ole Miss, Coach Cut to Coach O, that is about as wide as one can get. Holgorsen had a nephew playing in Tx at a high school, I think he signed with Memphis. Jimbo Fisher's last name should be Bowden, if you follow his resume. A good friend of mine played at A&M, coached at A&M, then coached Brett Farve. Worked with Jimbo, moved an worked with another former LSU OC, during the Dalton Hilliard years, Ed Zaunbrecher. So many coaches I know have moved so many times. Everytime thinking, this is it, this is a place I can settle down. Many coaches will not turn in another in due to violations, like one said, I may have to work with that guy one day on a staff. It takes a special person to be a football coach, got to have a good wife, understanding kids. Then two of my best friends, their sons are in the profession. One of the sons just got engaged, the parents sat the girl down an explained to the future Daughter-In-Law, just what she was getting into if she married their son. It's great to hear from one, telling you they have just picked up a great job. Then to talk to one, after just getting fired for the first time. Sorry to ramble on.
At 5-5, with Baylor and Ok left, guess he is ready to move on. Wish only the best for him. Gundy was a hot name, now, don't know. Might be best for him to move on. Once the domino's start falling, we'll have a better shot at seeing who will fall where. It's kind of like musical chairs, when the music stops, you want to be seated.
Brings up the question if Terry's last name should be Bowden. The Bowden comparison is one I've made before in my circles. Both he and Bobby have/are dealing with the same type of off-the-field issues and for an inexplicable reason I certainly handled Bobby's explanations for his players getting in trouble far better than hearing Jimbo skirt his... (I'll concede my opinion on Jimbo may be largely shaped by that first staff he had at FSU: Gran, Trickett, Craig, and Fisher all with Auburn ties...although my opinion on Trickett has changed over the years.)
Trickett was at Auburn when Jimbo was there. This was the first time I really got to know Jimbo. Some may forget, Trickett coached OL one year at LSU under nick. Didn't last long. Trickett is one of the better OL coaches in college, having never played the position. He was a safety in college. He is a fun one to watch coach guys two and three times his size. When he spins the bill of his cap around, he means business.
One of the things that has impressed me about Trickett is his ability to teach offensive linemen in more than one system; vastly different systems.. As example, the success he had at WVU when Rich Rod was there and the success he's had at FSU HIs career has gone from power, to finesse, back to power and he's still producing some good linemen.
Like I said a great achievement for someone never having played the position. Over the years, LSU has had some great OL coaches, Trickett, Hal Hunter, Larry Zierlein, etc. everyone I've talked with has given high praise to Grimes. What he teaches and how he is on the recruiting trail.
What was Chiz's record at Iowa St before going to the barn? Gundy lost 31 that were on his cotton bowl team last year. Guess that excuse only works for LSU
