i think most said if we continued sucking on offense and defense. which was true. could be les' best coaching job thus far in his 10 yrs if it holds up.
I thought we were almost as young in '11 as we are this year that was pretty impressive as well. I think the difference was experience ( not talent) at qb that year to start the season. New online schemes took us a little time to adjust to as well this year.
We had some older guys on d that were leaders, Brandon Taylor and Ron Brooks, Pittman on the d line I think as well, but the talent was all underclassmen.
i meant improvement from the first game of the season til now. '11 was his worst coaching job ever. because of one game. not forgiving that one.
I just never saw it as us sucking as badly as so many here were saying we did. We were very young but talented up the middle of our defense. Beckwith hadn't proven to the staff that he was ready to take over but was flashing the talent we all new he had. Godchaux was impressive from the start. The online was winning lots of individual matchups but whiffing on a lot of blitzes. You could see the talent and depth at running back and WR. We got our asses handed to us for 3/4 of the State game but the fact is we really did come awfully close to pulling a rabbit out the hat in that one. I think Les made a mistake caving to external pressure and starting a true freshman on the road against the war chickens. Of course Jennings didn't do him any favors the week before.
I was as miserable that night as anyone. I contend to this day that no one could have led a team that young and cocky to win that night. It was the best team of the nicky era in gumpville. Our immensely talented freshmen and sophomores spent a month listening to everyone tell them they were the greatest team in college football history. They were playing a team they had already beaten on the road. They were playing in what had to feel like a home game. When the gumps, who had all the motivation in the world to play their best game, came out and hit them in the mouth they didn't have an answer. Looking back I'm surprised it was still a game in the third quarter.
