Seems reasonable and probably acceptable to Brees. Give him 2 years and spread the money out guaranteed for after to lower the cap hit tirk hit the number that seems doable. The Vikings won't go a hell of a lot higher than that and at this stage of his career he has as good a shot at a superbowl with the Saints as he does with anybody. He could probably get a couple of mil more from the Vikes but he would have to learn a new offense and get in synch with new receivers as well as O linemen. For all the shit we think about Mickey Loomis he does seem to find a way to have the money for at least one big free agent signing every year. It doesn't always work out (can anybody say Jarius Byrd) but this year's target might well be Jimmy Graham. Brees to Graham in the red zone could be huge in a playoff run. They can likely get Graham for $10 mil but will he pay that? Gambling on a draft choice at TE is too risky for this superbowl window. There are other needs but there are still a lot of unanswered questions at this point getting close to the draft. If Okafor is healthy they don't need to draft or sign an edge rusher. I would love to see Delvin Breaux fully healthy for the first time in his football career but waiting to see if that is so is too risky. They hit the jackpot with Lattimore but do you try to draft a CB or sign a free agent? I would make Graham my #1 free agent priority (behind Brees) and hope to be in a position to move up enough to draft Christian Kirk to pair with Thomas and give a return threat.
Good stuff. I’d target signing Brees, Graham, and try to pull in either Butler or Cromartie, then target BMayfield in draft to replace Drew 2-3 years from now. Go DE later in draft.
Mayfield will be a top 10 pick. Saonts don't have the 2nd round pick they would have to throw in to move up that much. Besides, even if Mayfield turns out to be the next Drew Brees he won't help get them to the superbowl holding a clipboard next season. And there are unanswered maturity questions surrounding him.
Ian Rappaport tweets that "significant progress" was made on Drew's contract yesterday (2 year deal), and that they probably finish it today.
25 mil and 2 years is pretty fair. Drew took a hit in length and mrk value. Gave us a "hometown discount" imo
In actuality 1 year deal with team option yr 2 per schefter. And a no trade clause so he retires a Saint.
Agreed. Let's see if we're smart enough to use it. nola.com reporting we won't make Delvin Breaux a tender offer, but he's tweeting that he wants to stay with Saints. IMO, a healthy Breaux opposite Lattimore gives Saints one of the league's top CB tandems. emphasis on "healthy"
