Still, 5'9" going into his senior year of highschool - he's still got a good possability of growth left. IMO, we will need 2 QB's in this class. One that will basically just be a backup his entire career and one that can be groomed to take over behind Perrilloux. This guy could be a QB we're looking at to fill the "backup" role.
Well, growing 3" isn't impossible...I grew almost 2.5 inches AFTER I graduated high school...and this guy still has a year before he graduates. And if you don't want to hear "exceptions", then don't phrase your response by making it sound like ALL NFL coaches would turn him away...because that's not the case--and Flutie and Brees are examples to back up my statement. So...between the 2 of us, one statement was backed by examples and facts (mine)--the other by speculation (yours). ...and "Flutie can ride the pine for 8 years" all he wants because the fact remains that HE WAS ON SOMEONE'S ROSTER AS AN NFL QB DESPITE BEING SHORTER 6'0".
That's true and I think 5 of them are going to be getting a lot of playing time this season as well. With that in mind, we may need another class of 5 or so O-linemen including a couple highly recruited ones. Point taken. It's not an immediate need, but something that will go a ways in helping our future success.
If we could land three 5 star players, where would ya'll want them to be at? I would pick an OL, a TE, and a Safety.
I agree with you, Deek. We got some good prospects at LB--they're just at OLB (Odom and Riley appear, at least to me, as those best-suited to play early) but we could use another 5-star LB (either OLB or ILB). Cutrera and Sheppard aren't any sloutches at MIKE, but we could use some additional top-end talent (top 15 at the ILB position) to provide depth and challenge Cutrera and Sheppard beyond '08.
OK... I was 6'0" at age 13, and have remained there since. Anecdotes.... There are 32 NFL Teams. You have one career backup example (who started 2.5 seasons) and one question mark example who has had one good season and whose team is putting him up on the open market. Do I really need to go after Mel Kiper, Jr's draft evaluations or can you put 2 and 2 together on your own? Once even a quarter of NFL (ok, even 1-A College!) quarterbacks become shorter than 6'0", you'll have an argument. Otherwise you're just grasping.
Jeff Blake was 6'0" when he was a Pro Bowler for Cincy...Eric Zeir was the backup in Baltimore for awhile...and he was 6'0". Then you have Brees and Flutie. and for the record, doesn't matter if they are "back ups"--they are STILL NFL players are they not? That's what we were talking about after all wasn't it? --whether or not someone 6'0" or shorter could play QB in the pros.....NOT if he would be an All-Pro, Hall of Famer or even a starter. But "backups" are still considered "making it to the pros"...And, 6'5" QB's like Ryan Leaf and Rick Meir WISH they had the career of Doug Flutie and Drew Brees... Perhaps you should just read this: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/news/1998/07/28/short_qbs/ And as far as you not growing since you were 13? ...I dunno...perhaps you should have continued to drink more milk???
Thiel isn't going to play QB on the next level anyway (unless it's a tiny school) so it doesn't really matter.
A top-rated QB is a definate must. They are the hardest to pick up. We should not have a big problem on the lines.
