I'm very conservative. I used to be completely opposed to legalizing pot.

Then I got into Milton Friedman. He utterly converted me by making nothing but sense in his reasoning.

This is the video that converted me, for my fellow conservatives.

The Federal Govt. has no business dictating to the states what should and shouldn't be legal. Not to mention the Trillion plus dollars wasted on the drug "war". And the drug cartels we have fueled for a few decades.

If you want to smoke crack then so be it. Just don't come to me or the govt. asking for help when you get sick. Personal responsibility.

I'm not buying it. People (in general) do not exhibit the personal responsibility required, hence laws are needed. A country full of meth heads would be the real version of the zombie apocalypse.

i think milton Friedman is the man with whom i most agree. before you interject something here, rex, i should note that i have no idea what he thinks about foreign policy and i would assume i might disagree with him on that one.

also regarding drugs, i was thinking recently when i was really sick (i am getting over pneumonia that was nightmarishly terrible) that i wish i could prescribe drugs for myself. i always know exactly what i need. but then i thought of the negative effect it has on everyone when antibiotics are abused, creating superbugs or whatever. so its a tough question.

Weed should be taxed and sold like tobacco and liquor. Coffee is more harmful.

All other drugs need to remain illegal. It doesn't take much abuse to create real problems.

but there is no real link between legality and abuse. nobody says "man, i would destroy my life with coke if only it were legal"

i am kind of a nerd with straight-laced friends and even i can get coke easily. legalizing doesnt make people say "well now that coke is legal i might as well get nuts."

its like amsterdam. legal weed does not increase % of users. people use or dont use drugs independent of laws. if i want drug X i can get it. i simply dont want it. the laws only make things worse, cause violence and restrict legit folks from selling.

besides, if i want to try coke i should be able to legally. i do not intend to abuse it. and even if i did still should be legal.

You cannot allow highly addictive drugs to be ungoverned. Drug addicts are not so much criminals as they are victims,.. although they certainly become criminals to support their habit.

Giving away free samples to get people hooked is the American way, but you can't allow Phillip-Morris to turn the USA into the land of crackheads.

    --------------------

Legalize marijuana, tax it, take the market away from the Drug lords.

I have an Oregon medical marijuana card, my grower is a responsible law abiding farmer. Legally, he can grow for 4 patients, and sell more to card holders to cover some expenses.

The police inspect his operation every 3 or 4 months.

Again,.. seemingly the drug lords are out of the marijuana market in Oregon. I haven't seen foreign weed in years, the illicit stuff non cardholders buy,.. still seems like top notch Oregon grown bud.

    ---------------

Turns out my grower is also a respected expert, harvests a crop about every 65 days.

It's simply free enterprise really,... the prices even drop in the fall when the outdoor harvests come in.

My main point is, Growing marijuana and distributing it, doesn't have to be a criminal enterprise.

In Oregon, medical marijuana is sanctioned by the State, approved only by the patients Dr, and is monitored by the police.

And the State of Oregon receives a $100 a year for the patients card, and $100 dollars a year for the growers permit.

It seems to be working beautifully,.. and we're not funding cartels.
