Scenario #3 (TCU vs Boise) would be the worst thing for the BCS. As others have alreday said, no one will watch the game. It will be the lowest rated BCS championship in the history of college football. The presidents of all AQ conferences & universities will revolt in a way that will cause the entier system to be turned upside down. If Boise or TCU came out as champion in an 8 team playoff, I would congratulate our new champion. But if either one (or both) are placed in the championship game as part of a beauty contest, I will call for the 2010 season to be completely redacted from all records.
FYI, LSU has the 7th ranked SOS, Auburn has the 3rd, Boise has the 61st, TCU has the 83rd or 84th, and Oregon has the 94th toughest SOS. Pathetic.
Worst thing is au winning it all then being stripped of the title after playing a one loss team while an undefeated bsu and tcu get left out
Which is the reason we have a shot, and should be considered should AU stumble. Now, is that before we add the OM game, because if so it would have to get bumped up with that added. Also, if some of our other competition, UT, WVU, UNC, UF, continue to win ours will also get stronger. Anyway you cut it, none of the teams ahead of us, with the exception of AU could hang with our schedule.
I don't really think ratings would suffer. Do people in big cities far away from the teams playing really care that much more about watching a team from Alabama or Oregon than they do Idaho? Fans will watch the same as most years. When Florida, USC, or Texas play in the title game, I would expect ratings to go up because those schools are located in highly populated states or cities.
I'm glad you ask. Yes. Look at the highest rated football games this year, that should do it for you. Like a boxing match or any popular sport, match-ups matter. People will always be intrigued by such stuff.
Sad thing is all the best match ups are occurring in the regular season in the SEC West. I think Auburn-LSU, Auburn-Alabama, and LSU-Alabama are all better matchups than anything you could get in the MNC. Oregon vs Auburn is the best case for a good game. I am personally hoping for a crash and burn though because I hate the current format.
I think the only BCS killing scenarios would be TCU vs. Boise, and it has horrible ratings. The only other thing I would see as BCS killing is a AQ undefeated team getting passed over for a No-AQ team, if that happened it would be instant death for the BCS. And I don't think that would happen this year.
Here's the tv rating of all major bowl games since 1999: TV ratings TCU/Boise would be lucky to pull a 10 rating. USC/Texas has the all-time high at 21.7.... only 8 bowl games have drawn the magic 17+ rating.
TCU vs Boise St would be the worst. That should collapse the BCS and get a play-off system in place with automatic berths for all of the conference champs. Right after that announcement, LSU leaves the SEC and joins the Sun Belt conference that guarantees a spot on the playoffs every year...
