What is a shuttle?

I noticed on some of the recruiting sites they give the speed of a player's shuttle. Can someone explain what that is? The only shuttle I have ever heard of in football is the shuttle pass.

The third thing I would like to discuss is how coaches and scouts can differentiate between speed and quickness. Optimally, you want your draft picks to possess both qualities at the highest level. But that's not always the case. The 20-yard short-shuttle test is done by coming out of a stance with one hand on the ground, running five yards to their right, touching a line with their right hand, sprinting back the way they came from for 10 yards and touching a line with their left hand, and returning through the point they started from. If a player can't stay low, change direction twice quickly and not slow down at each turn, he will perform poorly in this test.

A general rule of thumb that I used in comparing the 40-yard dash times (speed) to the 20-yard short shuttle (quickness) was to subtract .5 seconds from the 40 time to arrive at the right short-shuttle time. For example, if a player ran 5.0 in the 40-yard test, I would expect to see 4.5 in his short shuttle to measure his quickness as it relates to his speed. If a player ran 5.0 in the 40 and had a 4.3 short shuttle, then he was .7 better and I knew he was more quick than fast. If a player ran a 4.5 in the 40 and also ran a 4.5 short shuttle, I realized I was looking at a player with straight-line speed, or as we like to refer to them "track speed" guys.
