That isn't the point, TB3. The media is clueless...I mean there was a report about Baton Rouge I saw on one of the cable news channels...stating how the city (of Baton Rouge) was, for the most part, spared from the dreaded storm surge.:rolleye33: That was that...as if nothing else happened. The same thing happened after Katrina. Yes, because of the enormous devastation, there was SOME coverage of MS. Pretty much NONE of AL, although it too was ravaged as you well know. But if you relied on the national media, NOLA was seemingly the only area affected by Katrina. How many times in the 6 months we were living with my parents did I have somebody ask "Oh, I thought Katrina hit NOLA. Don't you live in MS?"!! I realize, and in fact, totally understand. I am originally from NOLA, and still have friends and family that live there. My girls (previous marriage) lost 100% of their belongings, including pets. BUT... The point is, the same didn't happen during Gus, so it's like it didn't happen. Like the storm turned away at the last minute and went back out into the Atlantic and died. Nevermind the devastation in the CAPITOL CITY of LA, and all the coastal communities to the south. Nevermind the tornadoes that wreaked havoc all around the southeast.
You are not understanding the point. There is no reason WHY the national media SHOULD cover it. In other words, they didnt fail like Stacey suggested. Had WBRZ shown re-runs of Matlock and not weather updates then that would have been a complete failure. But just because they dont show Baton Rouge doesn't mean a thing. Its almost like people want attention rather then really need it. I suspect the same people that think ESPN hates us are the ones that feel the national media should cover Baton Rouge. Basically you want attention, but you DONT need it. As for Alabama, the whole town of Bayou la Batre is pretty much still missing and almost every house on the eastern shore had flooding. Dauphin Island split in two and those people had way worse damage than Baton Rouge. They didnt need the CBS evening news to cover them to show other people what hurricanes can do. People get it. Unfortunately a lot people in the area have been hit hard numerous times in the recent past and have come to realize that is just how the world works. Sad but true. The national news only cares about ratings. If Baton Rouge had some awesome live footage and pictures and stories that Greta could cover then there would be there. But there are lots of other stories that make them money. They know people suffered, that isnt the point. Is this not common sense? Edit to add I dont want people to think I hate these areas, and I do feel bad that people were hit by the storm. I feel bad that they do not get the attention they deserve because sometimes it can result in donations. But then again there is an opportunity cost involving someone else if the media doesn't show their story.
PWI? You're right. They don't need to cover it. BUT, they do. They cover NOLA until it doesn't hit NOLA. To hell with BR. To hell with Houma. To hell with GI, MC, Cocodrie, Montegut, Pointe-Aux Chenes. They'll do the same with Ike, 'cept it'll probably be Houston. If it hits Lake Charles or Corpus, oh well. They are the ones that make the big deal out of it...playing it like a violin...playing with peoples emotions. People across the country are practically reaching for their wallets to make donations to the poor people of NOLA, and then it hits BR...or does it? Apparently, it hit nowhere.
I know it sucks, trust me. When Katrina destroyed a lot of my area it less than a year after Ivan demolished the area. How many people even remember Ivan, or that it was STRONGER than Katrina. Nobody. We'll all get over it. It is no different than some crappy Cowboys WR getting more attention than the Saints #1 guy. That damn media. I sold my ticket to a Tulane fan this week.
I remember Ivan quite well. That was the storm that NOLA evacuated for, but it didn't hit there. Sooooo, people were a little reluctant to leave for Katrina. My ex told me two days before Katrina hit that she wasn't leaving again...it was too much of a strain when they left for Ivan...and nothing happened in NOLA. I advised her then that I would be there Sunday morning to get the girls. She called me Sunday morning at 5am from Memphis...thank God.
Getting back on subject has anyone heard anything? Clair? edit: I just read your blog. I guess we will see early tomorrow afternoon. From Clair's blog: http://lsusportspalace.wordpress.com/
I totally agree with your last sentence, but I'm just not getting how you're going about making your point. More than half a million people in BR were without power in the worst storm to hit that city in 40 years. That is a story of significant importance (national), and as a member of the media (local), I feel qualified to make that statement. My point (and I've seen this in action for years, dareIsay decades) is that the national media decides what its story will be before the event happens, and if the outcome doesn't fit their story, they just move on. This is detrimental to the public good and demeaning to their (our) profession in general. National and local media, however, do have different responsibilities, and people should remember that when they watch. I will not stop hijacking this thread and allow the LSU talk to continue.
One last point. There was a story on the news last night about Ike and possible evacuations. The Dallas media's spin on the story was, "Since Gustav wasn't the 'mother of all storms' as predicted, people have decided to stay put for Ike." This is very dangerous, and their focus, in this case, was the Houston/Galveston area, who think that Ike "will just be another Gustav," so why evacuate? Therefore, I still contend that the media outside of Louisiana did, indeed, drop the ball because there is still an imminent threat, and people are getting lackadaisical. That caused nearly 2000 people to die in Katrina.
Dont take it lightly this storm will regain power in the Gulf and its a monster storm, we here in S.Florida dodged a bullet. It looks like it will go towards Houston/Galveston area. Prepare now.
