That need may have been addressed by today's signing of Dominique Allen, FB, 5-11, 250#. If he pans out, he can fill that job! :geaux:
This guy is a pure FB IMO. I think Miles wants another Toefield, Broussard before his injury, Hester, Scott, etc. Just think about the recent starting RB's we have had and most have been big backs. A strength of this class is versatility of athletes. That is why I'm not concerned about getting only one WR. There are so many athletes that can play WR or DB or scatback. We aren't sure if Mingo will be a DE or LB. Downs could play center in a pinch. Our 3 star players are good athletes, not second rate one dimensional position players. That makes them more valuable and increases their chances of suceeding or even making an impact on special teams. Our OL project is not ordinary, but 6'7" and 330 lbs. Some of these lesser rated guys will turn out to be starters and contribute mightily.
That's what I was thinking today. What other top team will have a huge need where a top freshman could possibly come in and start? Remember when Travis Minor came out of Catholic High? He had a chance to be the #4 or #5 RB for an average LSU team or go start for a national championship contender as a freshman for FSU. I think next year we'll have a few out of state prospects who might realize they're the missing piece for a BCS title run.
Happy about: Our class in general. Hats off to the recruiting staff. Anxious to see Dominique Allen, RR, Chris Faulk, Michael Ford, and Chris Davenport. Mongomery was a pleasent surprise too. Unhappy about: I would have liked to get one more WR, but regardless I think we'll be ok. The Benton thing.. Meh. No bigge as far as I'm concerned. We still made out like bandits.
Best: Russell Shepard, overall speed of the class, very high quality of the three star recruits. Worst: manipulation of LSU recruiting strategy by outside interests (RR's dad, if true). I think the implications of this are serious and completely overshadowed by the euphoria of the quality of the class. Very dangerous territory here. Very bad gut feeling if true.
The good- Shepard, Loston, Randle, Montgomery, and Ford. The overall speed, athleticism, and character of this class. The bad- The Benton situation. Id like to know the truth to the matter. Id lose a ton of respect for Miles and staff if his scholly was taken away to please Randles dad. Thats a Meyer type move. Hopefully thats not the case. Id have liked at least one more LB. Also I dont like seeing LSU lose out on instate talent, specifically Sentimore and Bell(eventhough Im not too high on him). I know we can sign them all though and am very, very happy with this class.
Benton is the only one of those guys that I really wish we had gotten. There was better talent, less questionable character or better grades available out of state in many of those circumanstances.
Best-Getting Sam Montgomery, I think he is the star of this class outside of Randle, Loston, and Shep. I started the thread on Montgomery, this guy has tremendous upside, I mean his speed and height, wow. Least-The Randle-Benton situation, just wasnt right at all. I am not happy with Randles dad, I know he could careless, but wow. Just wow. This class is better than any other class this year, because this class has leadership. With guys like Shep, Davenport, Allen, and Downs, its pretty special.
I love the character guys and the ball players on defense, but least like Saban's ability to recruit better this year in Louisiana.
