I think this has much more to do with us either feeling the season is lost or we are looking ahead. I have a hard time beleiving that our boys are getting hyped up for the piggies, like we get vs the gumps or the war chickens.

Except for when Bobby Petrino was their coach. They had some pretty good teams then

Those are uneven though. Alabama will always get more hyped up for Auburn, sometimes Tennessee (though probably not lately). Before Saban went to Alabama, the intensity for that series was probably the lowest it had been since Bear Bryant started at Alabama. Also, most LSU fans were paying more attention to Auburn, which cares more about Alabama and Georgia, maybe even Florida.

Ole Miss will get more hyped up for Mississippi St., Alabama, maybe even the Tennessee teams. A lot of lingering frustrations came out on both sides the last couple of years, but I'll believe that being an annually intense rivalry if it keeps going this way for another 5 years maybe.

Arkansas doesn't want to beat us as much as they'd like to play and beat the former SWC teams like Texas, but we helped derail some of their better teams over the last 20 years too.

a huge chunk of Ole Miss fans still have us at the top of their hate list.

as far as Arkansas, the games rarely meant anything for both teams.
typically, either the division was already settled or one of the 2 was completely out of the mix by the time that game was played.

'02 was the only year I can remember where whoever won that game was winning the division.

    contrast that with Auburn.
from '01-'06 ish, whoever won the LSU/Auburn game typically won the division.
that only added fuel to the fire that the 90s brought with intense games, crazy moment, cigars, etc.

those are the types of things that create a rivalry.
not an ugly trophy and late November date.

And beings they are still looking for their 1st SEC W there is your motivation. I guess ours is to not give it to them.

I don't believe they (R-Kansas) will be as motivated as in the past and definitely not the last three seasons. Think about it, LSU is no longer their last chance for romance. They have got another home game against Ole Miss and get a shot at their latest contrived rival, Missouri. As far as the last three seasons.
    • 2011 - Let's not forget that this game was for all the marbles, so to speak.
    • 2012- LSU essentially became their bowl game.
    • 2013- Same as before, plus the added incentive of salvaging at least one conference win.
Motivated less or not, I expect them to bring everything they have and attempt to use it against LSU. They have always seemed to in the past.

The Arkansas game....the piggie boards are blown up with LSU threads. The LSU forums are still talking about the gump game. That's the difference. Arkansas fans, this is their bowl game. LSU fans, meh.

I don't think a handful of years where two teams are at the top of the division equates to much of a rivalry. Before the Earthquake Game, Auburn was about the equivalent of Tennessee or Georgia on our list of rivals. We didn't play Auburn in 1990 or 1991, and we did play Georgia and Vanderbilt in both of those years.

I'll take your word for it about Ole Miss, but they were irrelevant for so long, I may not have noticed. That's where Tuberville first started annoying us, so that might have fed into Auburn, actually.

With it being the end of the season, usually one team has just been in spoiler mode, but that's pretty common in any rivalry played on the last week.

It was too late for LSU to win the division in 2006 (we had lost to Auburn and Florida), but LSU did keep Arkansas from having a shot at the BCS championship. Of course, Arkansas nearly returned the favor in 2011. The only thing similar with Auburn in recent years (since 2006) is had we beaten the Cam Newton team in 2010, we would have won the SECW and kept them out of the BCS championship.

I guess it's possible we could have beaten them at the end of last year, but that's a big assumption. We still wouldn't have won the West.

They have us and Missouri, but I'd be more excited about us than Missouri too.
