My main questions for 2008 are: 1. How long will it take for the quarterback to find his stride? 2. Can we find a punter good for 40 yards? 3. Will our green defensive backs be exploited? 4. Can we please stop a punt/kick return this season? Anybody got the answers?
The first three can, and will be worked out. The last one bothers me the most. Last year we had difficulty with coverage despite having a good punter, and I never could figure out where our breakdown was. I did not get the impression that Patrick was outkicking his coverage, and our special teams players have plenty of speed. I think I held me breath every time we kicked. Other than that, I am concerned with injuries to our QB. All three guys will have limited/no game experience, and we banged up Flynn pretty good last year. Even RP had to play through an injury in the SECG. With all new QB's, we don't have a lot of margin if one gets hurt.
QB play will be sufficient...although they will take their bumps and hope the defense can bail them out. Punting has me SCARED as of the spring game. Let's just hope for 100% third down conversions! Unless Eugene has really come a long way since getting toasted at Kentucky, I'm a lotta concerned about our Corners. They will need the most time to develop and will be the most tested area until they prove they can lock it down. Safeties will not disappoint. I see Jones / Coleman as the next great safety duo for LSU. IMO, one of the biggest problems with kick coverage last year was shoddy tackling in open space. Oftentimes, our guys looked like they were wearing concrete shoes when a return man made the slightest juke. The only way I can see to rectify this is to play more first-teamers in the kick coverage or seriously work on tackling skills with the second and third teamers. Additionally, I have a slight concern about linebackers. Beckwith is great, but the others really have something to prove. Other than that...just the schedule. Auburn at Auburn and Florida in the swamp are not usually very friendly to LSU...by that I mean our recent win percentages in those places do not play to our favor.
red, i read the title and then you take all the things i was going to type. i guess my other is if anyone will step up at line backer. and i would love to see LSU play a 4-2-5 with chad jones kind of playing a jack of all trades.
CB concerns me the most this season for a couple of reasons. We are very young and inexperienced on both sides even though we have a good bit of talent. Our defense depends greatly on our CB's being able to cover some of the nations top receivers man to man. I know our front four creates a lot of pressure greatly helping the coverage but a young CB lost in space can give up some huge plays in some tight games against quality competition and can change the momentum of a game quickly.
I think you might be on to something with that 4-2-5, thats a good idea, I like your line of thinking.
For some reason, I am not as concerned about the schedule as most here are. I see 3, maybe 4 games MAX that will be very difficult. I figure we'll win 1 of the three vs Aub, FLA or UGA and end up 10-2....probably. If that win comes against Auburn, we're probably going to ATL for the SECCG. The corners and QB play concern me the most. Our projected starter is a transfer from Harvard, and what little bit I've seen from our corners was NOT very good. :crystal::geaux::crystal::geaux::crystal:
I worry that our special teams performance has been average at best, and now the special teams coach is Co-DC. Gotta trust Miles though. He's earned it.
