If it happens we'll let you know. And it will some day, but it's paid off too many times to get upset about. There ain't a fan base in the country that wouldn't prefer to lose a game by going for the win instead of playing for the tie. The worst treatment Nick ever got from the LSU fans was huge BOO and weeks of pointed criticism after the Ole Miss game in which LSU had the ball with two and half minutes left before the half and Nick went conservative and tried to run out the clock instead of going for the score. We ended up punting to Ole Miss who went for it and scored before the half.
!. Defensive tackle positions. If Alexander comes back 100% we might be OK, but if not that leaves us with Nevis and Woods, two guys who haven't really done anything. After that I can't think of anyone else who has even seen the field. 2. The corner opposite Patrick Peterson. 3. Schedule.
1. QB Play. Every LSU fan should be concerned about QB play - we are still unproven there. It is unlikely that Jefferson will be All-SEC caliber. 2. DLine. We underperformed there last year & lost some talent. I feel fairly good about the starters, but our depth really concerns. 3. The starting CB opposite PP. If it is Hawkins, he will need to step up his game to make sure our Defense is up to par. I'm not worried about OL or our depth there. Our second string guys are more than capable. We basically don't have a third team, but if we had to resort to them we'd probably be screwed anyway. I'm not worried about Chavis or his "new" defense. The problem with our defense last year was entirely coaching driven, and the problem has been fixed. I'm not worried about special teams. We've got the talent and size/speed - no reason to be concerned.
not picking on you, but i'm in the camp that is wondering why everyone is so worried about our QB situation. granted, they're young, but OUR DEFENSE was the most pitiful thing last season. yeah lee sucked big time, but they both will be better (and russell shephard may be as well) this season -- can't be much worse. i have confidence in our offense. one anomaly of a season isn't cause for alarm in my book -- especially after we averaged, what, 30+ points a game last season. come on.
Off the top of my head I can think of 3 teams that have SEC rookie starters this year (Bama, UGA, Arky), and if it was even possible Auburn's QB situation is even more muddled than ours. This isn't going to be a banner year for QBs in the league for anyone except maybe Ole Miss and Florida, so why couldn't Jefferson have a good year compared to the rest of the SEC? I'll just come right out and say it, the DL was an embarrassment, even more so b/c of the talent there. I honestly can't see how this year's line could do that much worse.
I expect Jefferson to be third best in the SEC West, fifth best in the whole SEC. That's acceptable, but it's not what some people are expecting.
I think our offense will be fine. I expect Jefferson to perform relatively well - just not as well as some people think. Some fans are thinking he's ready to burst onto the national scene & I just don't see it.
3rd and 5th in what? Passing yards, efficiency, TDs, INTs? I don't think he'll be a pure pocket passer because of what he can do with his feet. And since we're likely to run the ball quite a bit I don't see either of those helping his numbers. But with the receivers we have I'd pick him to be 3rd overall in total yards behind Tebow and Snead, and even Snead's numbers might drop from the attention defenses are gonna be giving Ole Miss this year. JJ doesn't have a world of experience yet, but I'd definitely pick him to finish ahead of QBs who haven't even seen a whole quarter of SEC play heading into 2009.
