I've been trying to explain this to people for 2 years now, and it's like beating my head against a wall for all the good it does. People who think Miles is a lesser coach than Saban will always believe that no matter what happens.
1. Defensive Tackle - we have some guys who have tons of potential but haven't really proven themselves. 2. Quarterback - same as above. Hopefully Jefferson will not have a sophomore slump. 3. Defensive Secondary - Peterson is solid, Chris Hawkins scares me, and Jai Eugene needs to have a break out season. I saw glimpses last year of Jai being a solid cover guy, but he needs to do it consistently. With Chad Jones, Danny McCray, and Craig Loston we should be good at the Safety Position. Whoever wins the 2 corner position out of Jai and Chris "ball" Hawkins, the other needs to step up into that nickel back slot and be solid. honorable mention - Florida. In order to win the SEC this year, we will more than likely have to play Florida twice. If we can't win in Baton Rouge at night, barring injuries, i don't see us being able to beat them on a neutral site.
Florida has a ridiculously easy schedule this year, and that could backfire big time, to the point where a single loss may be enough to knock them out of the NC game. I'd love for that loss to happen at our hands in the SECCG.
Quote--for as much hope I have in Jefferson, I am going to go with QB play as my 1# concern. Jefferson has alot of poise, but little experience. If you add Lee (who will be better) and Shepard, thats still not alot to lean on. For the way Lee played in 2008, my 30 year old daughter is more accurate. It began to feel after a while that on every set of downs when he was rushed or pressured into a hurry-up during a play, I wasn't wondering "if" he would throw an interception resulting in a touchdown for the opposition, but "when". I have more faith in Jefferson and Shepherd than I do in Lee. They will rally this team. Lee doesn't have the confidence of the team.
My 3 biggest concerns: 1.) Expectations- Our 2 BCS NC's, 3 SEC Titles and strong recruiting classes this decade have made expectations SKY HIGH. Not just for me, but for our entire fanbase. What is considered a good season? 10 Wins? 9 Wins and a nice bowl game? 2. Talent- I mean, not to be negative.... do we have a talent issue? We needed a monumental comeback last year to beat Troy...friikin TROY!!! We lost a big lead to Arky who finished up 5-7. We got blown out by Florida. UGA and Ole Miss both whipped us pretty good, and all I hear about is how "loaded" we are with talent. 3. Did we really fix last year's issues? Or are we in the middle of a down-turn? We brought in a bunch of new, big-name coaches, and we're paying them some serious money. We have a QB coming back that looked real good in his 2 1/2 games last year. We brought in a "so-called" #1 recruiting class. :crystal::geaux::crystal::geaux::crystal:
One sub-par season does not equal a down-turn. Chavis has proven he knows what he's doing, and we have a QB corps that aren't acting like entitled knuckleheads. Florida had 4 losses coming off their '06 NC, I wouldn't say they're exactly experiencing a downturn right now, would you?
1. Quarterback. We still have quarterbacks with little or no experience. Although Jefferson gave us reason for optimism, he is still largely inexperienced. 2. Defensive line. We lost a lot of players. Will the new guys step up and do the job. We also have new DC and staff which is reason for optimism, but this is also a question mark. The proof is in the pudding. 3. Special teams. Last year was disappointing. Will there be an improvement this year?
