My biggest worries are: 1. Offensive Line -- We are less deep than I like and have new faces on the line. Big Herman is gone. Ciron Black hasn't allowed a sack in two years, but he did not blow open big holes for the running backs like Herman. We have fine backs, but they need holes to run through. 2. Defense -- In this case, I mean the Chavis defense that we haven't seen yet. Is it a good fit for our talent? How comfortable will they be in it this season. Can Chavis make the in-game adjustments that our last DC's failed to do? 3. Special Teams -- Sort of disappointing last year and I haven't heard much about it from coaches or "insiders" . That concerns me a bit. What do we have here?
for as much hope I have in Jefferson, I am going to go with QB play as my 1# concern. Jefferson has alot of poise, but little experience. If you add Lee (who will be better) and Shepard, thats still not alot to lean on. Second is the secondary. Hawkins has to step up, its that simple. He played well in spurts but was very inconsistent against top receivers. Last, but not least. Defensive line, it starts up front on defense, we have to be able to penetrate and stop the run. It gives our secondary a big boost when we can do these things.
Defense - we have talent and a proven DC, so I hope we can get back to the dominating D that we're known for. QB - JJ looks like he'll be fine, but he's still unproven. Lee need to show tons of improvement. Shep is the future, but he's not ready to start. Forcing Turnovers - we hardly forced any last year and with all of the picks thrown, our TO ratio was negative for the first time in 12 years.
1. DL - a unit that was arguably a much bigger disappointment than QB last season given the talent. It's very simple: no movement off the line = no disruption of running backs and no pressure on the QB on inside blitzes. 2. LB - way too slow reading the offense and reacting to the ball carrier, and ineffective on blitzes. Fast LBs are crucial to stopping spread offenses. Also, no pressure means few turnovers, as discussed above. 3. Special teams - we've got a special teams guru on the coaching staff specifically to fix what's been a gaping hole in LSU's game for a long time. It's time to start seeing a return on this investment. I don't buy the notion that we don't have the talent to be effective in this area. We're going to need to win the battle of field position to be successful this season. Honorable mention: O-line due to inexperience. And one more thing that I hope to God Chavis fixes: not wrapping up the ball carrier on tackles!!! There just isn't any excuse for this. Arm and ankle tackles are not enough to bring down elite players in the SEC.
1. QB Play 2. Will we be a dominate attacking defense again? 3. Economy, will the slow economy allow me to drink enough beer, and travel to enough games? One more pick six last year and I was heading to the local AA Meeting. "My name is John.....I have a problem, and his name is Jarrett Lee."
1. Inexperience at DL - Lost big players from a mediocre performance last year. Hmmm... looks like it could be our Achilles heel. Many young players need to step up. If we can't stop the run we are doomed. 2. Inexperience at QB - JJ played very well at the end of last season. But Marcus Randall played very well in the 2002 USCe game too... I'm just saying that he still has some proving to do. I think that he can do it. The alternative makes me very worried. 3. Implementing a new Defense may cost us some games during the mid-season crunch time. Hopefully the bugs will be worked out in the cream puff games. But usually when a team changes something fundamental, you don't know until they get to the power house teams if it is all in place or not.
1. qb - after last year, im not gonna feel comfortable about that position until i see that we have someone up to the job. 2. defense - hopefully last years cluster on the d was an abnormality. chevis looks to be a good def coord, but the proof is in the pudding. lets see how the team handles a new system. 3. probably off line - needs to step up. a young qb is gonna need all the help they can get when we hit sec play.
all good things listed so far that i would just be repeating, so: 1) Fans with expectations set too high. 01 (SEC champ)= Sr QB, 03 (SEC and NC)= Sr QB, 05 and 06(atlanta and BCS bowl)= Jr and Sr QB=eventual #1 pick. 07 (NC)= Sr QB 09= So. QB. be patient people, this isn't THE year. but a lot of good can come if the chicken littles don't prevail. the sched also gets better in '10, '11. 2) For the first time in my recent memory I am not confident in any facet of LSU special teams. 3) hoping the attitudes of the players that showed up in the ark game doesn't carry over. much rather the GT game attitudes.
