Can Loomis and company just go ahead and sign Drew to get this over with, so they can focus on other FA? Drew is such a team player that I'll bet he'd even be willing to take alot of it on the back end, so they can re-sign Nicks, Colston, and other high priority guys. Just don't understand what the hold up is. He's the best QB in the league, so go ahead and pay him.

As good a guy is Drew is, he can get a chip on his shoulder, if he feels slighted and if the Saints put the franchise tag on him (something I don't think they've ever done to any player or if they have, it's been a long time), he will feel slighted. I don't want to take any chances and would feel better when they get the deal done. They better not try to lowball him either.

Tom Condon is Brees' agent-attorney. he's on it.

he's the same guy that represented Peyton Manning, and negotiated the richest contract in NFL history for him - a $98 million deal, including a record $34 million signing bonus

Major clients give NFL agent Tom Condon a lot of clout

I'm with ya. It's not like I don't think he'll be a Saint, I'm just wondering what the hold up is. This should have gotten this done during the season.

So all of you are sure the hold up is on the Saints, and not on DB? His agent is known to take whatever time it takes to get the best deal. It's not about us people.

You have a fine grasp of the obvious. :hihi: Seriously though, they were in negotiations during the season, then they broke off for whatever reason. I'm sure both sides know what it's going to take. Give him his $100+ mil, sign the dotted line, and be done with it already. This is such a no brainer of him signing that it's tough to understand the delay, regardless of whatever side is responsible for the delay.

I expect it to get done before the March 3rd deadline for franchise tagging players.

Saints want to tag Nicks, which means they MUST sign Brees before this deadline.

I think a deal will be done on or around February 24th.

Depends on how reasonable Brees is.

Sure he can sign for a huge amount of money but if he drains all the resources he won't get another ring.

His agent couldn't give a **** about another ring. He just wants every last penny he can suck out of the Saints so if Brees isn't on top of it, it won't be good.

Negotiations are a two way street

Brees is a team player through and through, but he's also one of the top 3 QBs in the NFL and deserves to be paid as such. But, if he structures his deal so that a good bit of the $$ is on the back end, it would help the team re-sign our own FA and maybe even bring in a few. And, as long as the $$ is guaranteed, there's no reason why he wouldn't.

My whole point about the negotiations is that they should have been finalized by now. This started during the season, so each side has an idea of what it's going to take. But, for whatever reason, the deal didn't get done during the year, so here we are.

Like Loomis said, he'd be a fool to lose Brees, so a deal will get done. But as we all know, ANYTHING can happen (I know, I've seen it; especially concerning the Saints), so I won't feel completely comfortable until it's a 'done deal'.

Correct, the agent is the one negotiating and will get the most money he can for his client. But they will also agree to make it cap friendly for this year until the salary cap jumps in 2013 due to the new TV deals that will kick in.

The deal will not break the Saints in such a manner that we can't field a competitive Super Bowl contending team.

Everything will be fine. It's just part of the process. (damn, I'm starting to sound like Saban)
