Resume: -Michigan DC 2003-2007 --At Michigan, consistently high rankings in conference total D every year. --Great Recruiter --Let go when RichRod cleaned house (very unpopular move with UM fans) -Current Louisville DC --At Louisville, improved National Ranking of Total Defense from 84 last year to 49 this year (understandably not wonderful due to lack of talent since Petrino's departure) Could his Michigan connections also help wrt Les Miles?
Michigans defense in 07 was not a great one. And L'ville isn't that impressive either considering their in 7th place of 8 not so great teams. He wouldn't be a good fit here.
Michigan's D in 2007 had lost a lot of seniors....Louisville is just impressive because of the turn around in national rankings. In fact, apparently to Lville fans, he has done such a great turnaround on D they want him to replace Kragthorpe as HC.
How does a 1-5 conf. record and a 5-6 overall in the weak Big East consitute doing such a great job on D? Maybe their used to being mediocre, but their still way far off from being saved... let them keep him imo. And Syracuse beating ND does not make the Big East a scary place.
Because they were absolutely a wreck last year? Kragthorpe has ruined recruiting at Louisville...this is evident since Petrino left. In NATIONAL RANKINGS for Total D...Louisville went from 84 last year to 49 this year. This is English's first season as DC, so he obviously hasn't had the time to get better personnel in for the defense. It's difficult for anyone to go from #84 to top ten in a year's time when they're only in their first year...but I would consider an improvement of 35 places to be significant progress towards a better D.
Well L'ville was 3-4, 6-6 last year... so somehow they got worse even though their D got better? I hear what you're saying, but in a lot of these rankings the numbers can be slightly midconstrued... as sometimes say #34 and #45 defenses are seperated by a total of 87 yards allowed. Still not very impressive to me as their conf. and over all record got worse.
Well a D isn't everything, their O is what really keeps bringing them down 2008 Total O Louisville- #43 2008 Turnovers Lost- #108 (This will lose games, lol) 2007 Total O Louisville- #6 2007 Turnovers Lost- #52 ^This is why Louisville did worse this year. I don't know how much RE could do to win games when the O is that bad.
I would gladly take him back any day. Rumors though are he is in the front running for the HC job at EMU. http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20081124/SPORTS0203/811240414/1361
