Last night in the Fiesta Bowl West Virginia Interim Head Coach Bill Stewart conducted his interview for the head coaching job at West Virginia on national television. This morning he is being named the next Head Coach at West Virginia. That was the best audition for a head coaching job I've ever seen. http://collegefootball.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=757395 http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/football/ncaa/01/03/bc.fbc.wvirginiacoach.ap/index.html http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3178538
It is a great story and the 'neers played well. However, it's got all the markings of a Larry Coker hiring after Butch Davis left Miami. Usually, when you reward a long-time assistant for his loyalty & long-time work, you find out a few years later why he had been an assistant for so damn long.
Seems like a great guy, I wish him well. He certainly has his heart in the right place. Long as he has good assts think WVA will be fine.
Re: West Virginia names Bill Stewart Head Coach he's been the only interim coach to win his bowl game, which makes interims 1-6. Honestly, I had never heard of him before last night, but obviously he had WVU ready and beat a very good Sooner team. That 2nd half seemed like he had the Mountaineers set to "Easy" on a video game...lots of long scoring plays. I'm okay with it, as if it matters. They could chance to do a lot worse by going outside with a hire...there's no disruptions in implementing a new offense and the recruiting shouldn't suffer.
