All the decisions leading up to hiring O and having to give him a significant buyout were flawed for sure. But yes... if you put a small buy-out in place then the coach has zero chance recruiting in the SEC. Every kid we target and their families would be reminded of that buy-out and LSU's investment/confidence in a coach to be in place while that recruit is playing at LSU. We are fighting that some already but at least we have the numbers to counter the negative recruiting by other programs.
I have zero problem with the buyout. There eas practically no chance of having to pay the full amount after one season and small chance of having to pay $8,5 million after two. If the Tigers go 7-5 this season as most predict there will be a lot of grumbling and moaning but Oeaux would deserve to be allow to coach the 2019 season that could turn out to be really special. After that the buyout becomes a lot more manageable.
My question comes in the form of "is Miles still going to be getting paid?" If so, It would mean Miles and Orgeron are both receiving buyout payments along with any other coaches who may be relieved of their duties. Then there's the strong chance of LSU having to pay the buyout for the new coach, plus his salary... Adds up, ya know?
Yes, Miles will continue to be paid and Johnny Jones will continue to be paid. I don't see Oeaux getting fired anytime before the 2019 season. That's when he will really be coaching for his job. Joe Alleva's contract is up in July of 2020 and hasn't been extended by the BOS so whether Oeaux coaches the 2020 season all depends on how well the 2019 season goes. LSU may not have as much money as aTm, Florida or Alabama but it's still big time athletics with big time budgets. Buyouts are a cost of doing business that you hope you never have to pay but when you do there money is there.
If I remember correctly, the last time I saw something on college programs revenue, LSU was like 3rd or 4th in the nation. The only SEC program with more money generated each season than LSU was Bama, and it was a marginal amount.
We can afford any buyout that becomes necessary but it would be wiser to make better use of the athletic funds in the forst place. If we didn't have drooling idiots as university president and AD we could have had Jimbo Fisher in place at the end of the 2015 season but Oh Nooooo. F**King didn't want to spend the extra money. They still haven't caught on that in the SEC it just means more.
5 losses don't earn you anything. We can afford it but history says we won't. We don't want to actually compete with Alabama or even the aggies for that matter. Champagne dreams with a Pabst blue ribbon mindset. Our AthDept looks good but only on paper. To the number crunchers. And that's how it's run.
Joe Dean was the ultimate numbers cruncher. Look at the coaches he hired and I'm not giving him credit for Little Nicky.
Football rules everything. You can't lowball your way thru the front door. Not in the sec. We gotta try to survive in the interim. We gotta hope not to become completely irrelevant and pray we make a homerun hire next up.
