That month McChrystal appeared in London and said Biden's scaled-back proposal for military action in Afghanistan would lead to "Chaos-istan." Thats pretty funny. To echo what others have said, if he had a beef with the way barry was running this thing he should have done it behind closed doors. As for ROE it can be a big problem for the troops. I know we hated the ROE in Iraq when I was there and they don't play around with it either. If you violate it there is usually hell to pay. If that is what the Sgt was complaining about then I get that.
I'm glad he picked Petraeus, who essentially pulled Iraq from the abyss in 2007 in implementing the surge (which Obama and Biden both denouched at the time, by the way). He just needs to be given what he asks for to win the war, when he asks for it. And I read somewhere else that Petraeus' clout may help provide Obama political cover to backtrack on that ridiculous, dangerous timeline for withdrawal. Maj Winters in Band of Brothers: "Respect the rank, not the man."
I don’t think that’s the case today. They didn’t pull a draft for the current wars. Most of the guys that I've talked to that have come back from there just want to kill those fcking idiots. Our troops of today know what they signed up for and it would be a rare case to see some front liner not want to shoot his gun. The only part that might be like what you described would be those who get pulled for convoys. I am in the Air Force and all I do is fix F-15s, that’s it. While I would have no problem shooting back at some rag head on convoy duty, I could tell you that there are a number of guys I worked with that I could see freezing up.
I respectfully disagree. I have spent a year on the streets of tikrit and another in the area surrounding camp taji and I know more people that never fired a single round then I do that have. A lot more. Just sayin... Hell our patrol base got attacked one afternoon while our medic was going to the crapper. He tried to jack the slide on his 9mm, shot himself in the arm ,sh!t his pants and got a purple heart for it.
i think the only point i was trying to make is that it has to do more damage to the psyche of an American soldier than it does to someone who has been killing and being shot at since they were a child.
Well, you opinion is worth more than mine as you have actually been there, your point is well taken. All I have from over there is a handle full of friends who are really serious about their job.
