You will never convince me that it was "by design" that the Tiger's offense struggled. Despite the vanilla offense I am still concened ofver the lack of good blocking from the O line. Scott was continuously being gang tackled with no LSU blockers in front of him. Also the fact that on "3rd and Chavis" that there was no outside containment to prevent Locker from picking up all those first downs. I surely hope that Chavis makes some changes before we get into the meat of the SEC schedule. The highlights of the defense were Peterson, Coleman and Cutrera. Chad Jones never seem to be involved in any significant plays. I am also concerned that Russell Shepard never got into the game. There were some 3rd down situations in the second half where a Wild Tiger offense might have been the appropriate call. The only bright spots on offense were the solid play of Jefferson and the emergence of Tolliver as a threat to become the go to receiver over LaFell. I would have liked to have seen Randle in the game in a 3 wideout set along with LaFell and Tolliver Miles biggest coaching mistake was calling the timeout with 40 seconds left in the first alf with UW trying to run out the clock. The TO gave UW new life and directly led to them being able to get into position for the field goal to cut LSU's lead to 4 points
wish i could agree with you but i just don't see it. my main reasoning with this is it would've been a blow out if our defense would've just made tackles. for example, if chad jones would've made his three missed tackles of UW's first drive we would've had the ball and scored 7 more points than we did and UW would have 7 less points. 14 points is close to blow out. that would have also set the tempo and shut up the crows. there's no way the coaches wanted it to be that close or to get statistically beat. also on offense we did pretty much everything right. so again... i just can't see how the defense functioned the way the coaches wanted it to.
I agree with CParso that the staff was holding back the throttles, and it makes sense not trying to blow them out as it doesn't help the team's mental attitude (false sense of security with a big win). With the offensive line, I just hold that they offer JJ much better protection as it seemed their D was able to get to JJ a lot with pressure. I'd rather have the team see their weaknesses and focus on fixing it rather than having a big "win" mask the problems.
jj couldve hit dickson all night. either he hasnt learned how to check down to him well enough yet and/or crowton didnt call his number. i also expect sweeps and traps with kw wouldve been very productive with undersized but mobile tbob and dv____cek. anyone notice the constant changes at the los? i dont remember it happening about every other play last year. for those that still have the game, was he checking to runs or pass? or was it that no play was called until after they became set?
we won the game wtf makes you think Auburn is gonna finish that high in the standings? they haven't beaten a BCS team since last september, and were in a dogfight (up by only 3 in the 3rd) against LaTech!
exactly its just the first game, calm down. I think the defense will improve, so will the playcalling.
You mean Andouille. Dude hasn't shown his face since I outed him. My thought, exactly. If we're battling anybody for 3rd place, it's going to be R-Kansas. Frankly, I'd much prefer the game we got Saturday night over a 50-pt route of stupid directional Louisiana or Div I-AA State. Do you think Florida, Tennessee, or Texas have any idea what their weaknesses are after week 1? Hell no. Do we? You'd better believe it. Much better to find out now than after, say, the Georgia game.
We played poorly. Period. I am very please that we won a road game against a BCS program, but we played poorly...and it wasn't on purpose. I know the offense was vanilla on purpose...don't have a problem with that in general. Quite frankly, I've come to expect it in openers. The Mississippi St. opener in '07 was a vanilla gameplan on O. We beat them 45-0 on the road, and were able to get a few RP plays toward the end of the game. We weren't able to do that type of thing against UDub because they were still in the game. Defense is my main concern, though. You cannot rationally sit here and say that the defense played the way they did on purpose. They missed so many tackles, and THAT is the biggest complaint I have. But schematically, the defense was bad there as well. Unreal to see a LB standing in the middle of the field with nobody near him while a play goes behind him for a big gain. I may start a thread for the top 10 excuses seen after the game. There's a ton of them. But it's funny that the ones offering up excuses such as "Ciron jumped and cost us a TD" never factor in the calls that went in our favor. They are the ones that claim the score was really 31-13, because apparently the last TD doesn't count, and neither does the FG prior to the half. They never say the same for the gift we got when Cutrera walked in after the interception. We should probably look at things a little more positively...recognize that the team will improve. But at the same time, we should not sit here and mmake these ridiculous excuses for our poor play. We won! I'm lookiing forward to seeing a lot of you Saturday for the Vandy game, and I assure you I'm not embarassed to be an LSU Tiger fan. I will be there decked out in LSU gear with my two sons, and I will cheer my team when they do well, and keep my mouth shut when they don't. I won't ever boo the team, players, or coaches while sitting in the stands. But that doesn't mean I'm not a fan if I criticize obvious shortcomings or point out weaknesses on a message board.
Do I believe even for a minute that LSU held back from scoring in the game? Not at all.... Do I believe LSU could have scored 50 on them or scored at will? Not at all......much closer and I would be wondering about "shaving" points if this were true. However, I do see that the tigers did not exactly panic and throw out everything in the playbook. The way I see it, they just didn't have a great game. Did they hold some things "close to the vest?" Probably. Did jet lag and a late start have any effect? Possibly.. Will they make adjustments and correct some things? ABSOLUTELY--they are STILL LSU and that alone calls for some respect. First game. Many issues probably solved. Some not quite yet. But you don't pay some dude 3 or 4 million a year if he is some dirt wad. The man knows his job and my money says he will work it out. As someone posted earlier, OM looked on and off. Sure did. It turns out that several players (including Snead) had flu symtoms. Fever and throwing up. I know two or three guys can pee in the same toilet at the same time, but it must be tough sharing a "barf bucket." However, Memphis had something to do with some of it too. Time and injury problems will tell here. I see the tigers improving and being a force to reckon with.:thumb:
