WBB recruiting 2008

Van's first recruiting class is going to have to be a doozy. Most likely there will be only 6 returning players for the Tigers following the 2007-2008:

6.2 Sr. Kristen Morris
6.2 Jr. Porsha Phillips
5.10 Jr. Alison hightower
6.0 So. Tyra White
5.10 So. Katherine Graham
5.7 So. LaTear Eason

Phillips and Hightower are solid and from the sounds of it Eason should be a solid point guard and White a solid 3-4. But Tigers need to bring in some height. Here are some of the names linked to LSU:

6.3 Ayana Dunning out of Ohio. 5 Star talent
5.11 April Sykes out of Mississippi. 5 star talent. If Van can pull her in out of her home state, watch out.
6.2 Shakinnia Stricklen Arkansas 5 Star talent
6.1 Brianna Gilbreath Texas 5 Star Talent
6.4 Ashley Gayle Nevada 4 Star Talent
6.2 Latia McGee Oklahoma.

Don't be surprised to see at least 2 players from the JC rankings in this huge incoming class as well.

 

It will be real interesting to see what the new coach does.

 

Watched an interview tonight with Bob Starky and he seems to think Van will be a great recruiter. He asked the host how many coaches he could name that could tell a recruit you want to get to the WNBA I know what it takes to get you there, want to play in the olympics I know what it takes to get you there. I can't think of any current WBB coaches that have won a WNBA title and an Olympic gold as coach. It's not like he is taking over a program in shambles and rebuiling either. I think he will do just fine, plus he has a good personality and is real down to earth.

I was thinking the same thing. Sure, Van is highly reguarded and a top-notch coach...but I always thought having a young, vibrant coach that young players could relate to such as Pokey, was key to recruiting....

I'm not gonna put a basketball HOF'er under a microscope or anything, but I am curious to see how he's able to recruit...that, and how much the Pokey situation and bad media publicity has hurt recruiting (if any).

 

Recruiting may have already taken a hit.

The 2007-08 roster is up but 5 star recruit Tyra White isn't listed. The other frosh are listed.

 

Good news..Tyra White is still interested in coming to LSU.
