I was wearing an LSU hat at a UM baseball game the other day and some guy came up to me and started talking about the '96 CWS and said Morris' homer is the only walk-off championship-winning home run in College World Series history and is the only 2-out, ninth inning, walk-off home run in a championship on either the collegiate or pro levels, is that true? Thanks for the post! I watched it on TV in 96, and it is second only to Billy Cannon's run, as the top highlights of my life as an LSU fan. I didn't see Cannon's run, but both were high drama. National Championships on the line, late in the game, it doesn't get any better than that!!!
I remember watching that game and screaming like a lunatic when Morris hit that HR. What made it extra special was that Morris was hurt and had missed most if not all of the season. That HR was his only HR of that championship season. Along with Hodson's TD pass to Eddie Fuller in the earthquake game and watching Ricky Blanton pump his fists as #11 seeded LSU beats #1 seed Kentucky in 1986 NCAA Regional Final, it ranks with my all time favorite moments in LSU sports history.
Watching that highlight just gave me chills. One of my all-time favorite LSU baseball moments was the bottom of the ninth rally to beat San Jose State in the 1993 CWS. That was the game that put us in the final game against Wichita State. No one gave us any hope of beating the Shockers that next day, and we murdered them. Good times!
That was done on my 40th birthday. The game was back and fourth with a little bit of controversy. With 2 out and a runner on 3rd I thought we had lost it. I walked out the front door thinking about the game when my son started screaming Homerun. I ran back in watching Morris lap the bases and Cora face down on the ground and chills running through my spine. It was a happy birthday.
