Nebraska was pretty famous for their walk-on program before Callahan flushed it down the toilet.

Actually Solich radically changed the walk-on program at Neb
in 2001. My son had a HS teamate that had grown up in Neb. and
always dreamed of playing there (rushed for 1700 yds as a Sr in Tex
5-5A and no offers). Kid was the 5'9" 195 lb bowling ball, powerlifter type.
Neb reneged on many walk-ons that year and instead he went on to
be a 1AA AA and AC fullback but started off as a walk-on.:geaux:

I know that there used to be a whole squad of them at A&M who would wear 12. (12th man thing). I don't know if they still do that or not. Walk-ons used to be a big deal in special teams before it became popular to play your starters/best players on special teams as well. Its not unusual that they suit them up, but it is unusualy that they get to play unless its a blow out and even still they may not. Sometimes they can be spotted on the sideline because they are the ones wearing a jersey without a name, or at least that used to be the case. I think some of them do get their names on the jersey though so it all just depends I guess.
