Heard on Moscona just now. 5 local and 4 national semi-finalists for the new Voice of the Tigers. Charles Hanigriff, Patrick Wright, the guy who does the Pelicans games and don't remember the other two. He didn't say who the national guys were. Would say more but posting from mobile
I think Lyn Rollins is the pick here. Hanigriff is solid but just not enough flare to his voice. I think Rollins trumps him here.
The five local candidates are Charles Hanagriff, Patrick Wright, Lyn Rollins, Sean Kelly and Patrick Netherton along with about four national candidates they aren't naming. Rollins seems the natural choice to me also. Remember Mary Hart syndrome? That's Patrick Netherton to me. I think he is doing ULM or NSU games now but that guys voice is like fingernails down a chalkboard. No thanks
patrick wright, hell no, negative whiner and terrible. hanagriff, no, monotone as a mf. hes good in postgame show but only with gordy. need gordy back with hanni. but wont happen. get ben mcdonald for baseball. if not, then rantz. or get both. but rollins with rantz isnt horrible. cant take rollins for anything other than baseball however. for football get ron franklin. screw the local schmucks. for basketball get blanton and someone with some energy. but since im ignoring the fact its one guy, you have to go with the pelicans dude who is really good, sean kelley. the local yokels just dont have the chops. kelley is knowledgeable, fluid and on-point for the most part. we will miss hawthorne when its all said and done. but his age and boredom has caught up with him. its TIME! ok get michael buffers little brother, bruce. watch the second one to the end just because hes hilarious and an animal and my add kicked in. apologies. .
LSU wants to make what they call a "generational hire." Somebody who will be the Voice of the Tigers for the next 20-30 yeears. Hannigriff is 43. Wright graduated in 1992 so he is in the 42-45 age range. I don't know the ages of Kelly, Rollins or Netherton. I would think they would have to hire somebody from their mid 30's and no older than 45 to accomplish that goal. No names on the "national" applicants but there would be the danger of somebody with no ties to LSU or Louisiana using the job as a springboard to a network job after 3 or 4 years. I would be OK with Hannigriff for baseball but not for football or hoops. He is too laid back for a fast moving sport. Out of the names mentioned I would go with Kelly. I can't stand Rollin's voice, I don't know anything about what Netherton sounds like and I don't listen to enough women's sports to have a good opinion of Wright. Or they could just hire somebody with a good knowledge of all three sports and run his voice through some kind of digitizer to make him sound like John Facenda.
this is a big hire. this dude will become part of our families so to speak. dont f it up and hire pam ward.
Who is Pam Ward? While it might seem great to get paid to go to every football, basketball and baseball game and talk its an even bigger job than that. With hosting coaches talk shows its about 200 days of working per year and working at least 41 weekends. More if the Tigers advance in the playoffs. Whoever they hire will be only the 4th Voice of the Tigers: J.C. Politz, John Ferguson and Jim Hawthorne. None of the finalists mentioned are quite satisfying to me. The names of the so called "national" finalists haven't been revealed so we don't know if that means a name we all know or just somebody who has no ties to LSU or Louisiana. I sure hope its not Danny Kannell. Tim Brando would be good be he is too big time and too old for the longevity they are looking for. And will Doug Moreau stay on as analyst? He had to miss several games last year because of health problems and Gordie Rush did it while he was out. Marcus Spears would be great at it but he is already too big time for the job.
