As everyone should know by now, ace pitcher Zach Von Rosenberg is expected to sign with the Pittsburg Pirates today. They offered him a first round contract which he could not turn down. This is a huge loss to the LSU baseball program. A few years ago a MLB scout said they simply will not allow an elite player to go to college. God I hate the MLB farm system. It does enormous harm to college baseball.
Was this an unexpected loss? I wouldn't count on anyone drafted in the first 3 rounds coming to school
:geaux: Guess it was unexpected to a certain extent since he was a sixth round selection I believe, but the Pirates gave him a first round contract offer ($1.2 million). Can't blame him for not turning that down, but I hate it because I was looking forward to seeing him at LSU. I just hope we can keep Colvin. I also read in yesterday's Alexandria Town Talk that the Pirates offered their eighth round pick a $1.125 million signing bonus as well. Pretty shocking as the Pirates have never been know to throw out a lot of money in the past since they are considered a small market team. If the Pirates are going to throw that kind of money around, what does that say about what the teams with a lot of money are going to offer prospects in the future? Obviously, the money offered to top high school talent just went up big time and this doesn't bode well for LSU or College Baseball in general. When an eigth round pick gets in excess of $1 million for a signing bonus that's bad for college programs. :LSU231:
