http://espn.go.com/college-football...nnessee-volunteers-hire-butch-jones-new-coach Thought they would open the wallet and make a big splash. Guess they had trouble finding any takers.
I can certainly understand the meltdown. Sad sad day to be a Vol. I'm working on a new school song for them called Rocky Bottom!
Early reports are he wants his Cincy coaching staff. If true, here comes some more spread. That's 2 out of 3 new hires.
A variety of thoughts here. Volunteer fans being in a meltdown? Remember, this is the same fan base that thought Kiffin was a great hire. I see Jones being referred to as the guy who followed Brian Kelly and then that thought is followed by questioning his coaching ability. I didn't see any questioning Kelly when he followed Dantonio. Cincy has proven one thing. They can hire good coaches and they can lose good coaches. When I compare Strong to Jones the only distinct advantage I see with Strong is experience recruiting in the SE. I weigh that with recruiting to Cincy can't be an easy task. Out of the four new hires in the SEC I'd rank them in this order—best to worst. Bielema Jones Stoops Malzahn Jones is certainly walking into a better situation than Dooley when it comes to inheriting a roster.
i heard they got turned down by John Gruden, Mike Gundy of Okla St, Charlie Strong of Louisville, and Larry Fedora of UNC... Jon Gruden: "There were discussions among the two sides late last week, but Gruden informed Tennessee officials after talking with his family that it was a move he didn't want to make at this time, according to sources." http://espn.go.com/college-football...tennessee-volunteers-search-coach-sources-say Charlie Strong, Mike Gundy: "Charlie Strong has decided to stay at Louisville after declining a contract offer from Tennessee on Wednesday, a source told SI.com. The news comes about 24 hours after an ESPN.com report that Tennessee appeared to be zeroing in on Strong. Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy also turned down the position, The Oklahoman reported." http://aol.sportingnews.com/ncaa-fo...lle-coach-says-not-to-tennessee-volunteers-si Larry Fedora: "SB Nation reported that North Carolina head coach Larry Fedora turned down the Tennessee job.Tennessee also had been interested in Louisville head coach Charlie Strong, ESPN analyst Jon Gruden and Oklahoma State heac coach Mike Gundy. Fedora just finished his first season at North Carolina, going 8-4. ... According to ESPN's Joe Schad, Tennessee is now interested in Cincinnati head coach Butch Jones and Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart." http://www.sunherald.com/2012/12/06/4344463/report-fedora-turns-down-tennessee.html#storylink=cpy
they were reportedly also looking at Tommy Tuberville: "Tennessee's long and publicly maligned coaching search could finally be coming to a close with two final names: Cincinnati's Butch Jones and Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart. Multiple sources have confirmed to SB Nation that Jones and Smart are the leading candidates following Louisville head coach Charlie Strong's decision to stay with the Cardinals. Wes Rucker first reported Jones is Tennessee's top target. However, the Volunteers have also been in contact with current Texas Tech head coach and SEC veteran Tommy Tuberville, according to a source. Tuberville is a two-time SEC head coach, first with Ole Miss (1995-'98) and then Auburn (1999-'08), where he led the Tigers to an undefeated season in 2004. As of Thursday evening, Tuberville had not officially interviewed with Tennessee, but had been confirmed as having been in contact with the Volunteers. Jones, who spurned offers from both Purdue and Colorado in the last week, is considered the top choice." http://www.sbnation.com/college-foo...by-smart-tennessee-coaching-search-candidates
