Things look very good with Bryant, and the coaching staff is very high on him. He'll probably commit to us before summer ends.
It's important to keep in mind that Rivals' and Scout's knowledge at this point about the relative strength of recruits is pretty limited. They simply don't have enough scouts on the ground to really properly judge these kids, and they don't have access to most of the camps where these recruits get evaluated by coaching staffs. So don't be thrown off by Bryant's 3-star label. If the coaches are this excited about an out-of-state prospect, he's pretty solid. Thanks to the blog, I'm following recruiting a lot closer a lot earlier than I ever have before, and it's causing me to grow a little disillusioned about the ranking system. I've always known it wasn't perfect, but I'm beginning to believe it's an entirely iterative process whereby rankings are based not on a whole lot of first-hand information, but on second- and third-hand information that measures more the "buzz" a player gets rather than his actual skill.
This came up after Boise St. beat Oklahoma. Boise recruits mainly 3* and 2* players in the NW USA, plus a few from Canada I heard. Boise thinks they are mis-rated by the agencies because they are from smaller schools. Boise thinks some of their 3* are actually 4*, and their 2* are really 3*. For what its worth, it's an inexact science. However, with the agency 5* that are well scouted, the ones they pick as future stars usually turn into stars, they just don't identify everyone that will become a star. Nice blog, I checked it out!
