According to DandyDon.com and sportingnews.com, Vanderbilt has offered Auburn Offensive Coordinator Gus Malzahn the head coaching job. Sources close to the situation say Malzahn is mulling over whether or not to take the job and is expected to announce his decision within the coming days. ESPN also has reported Vanderbilt is expected to announce their new head football coach sometime this week but didn't mention any names. Thoughts??

Her would be insane to take that job.
Vandy is a great school grant it. A fine school.
But it is essentially the Detroit Lions of the SEC from a football perspective.

He is hamstrung by the very difficult requirements, let alone the facilities and other limitations Vandy has from a football perspective

Lol. Yeah, he'd be crazy to take a job paying up to 3 mil/year, a HEAD COACHING job as opposed to an OC job at a sinking ship. At Vandy, he wins 5-6 games/year, maybe even a low tier bowl game, and he's a prime candidate for a big job. Vandy is a stepping stone, and this is a perfect situation for him.

^This. Why pass up a HEAD COACHING job at a SEC school AND a significant pay raise?? That just wouldn't make much sense to me. Newton is gone, and Chizik won't be going anywhere anytime soon if he keeps winning football games. Every assistant coach aspires to be a head coach someday. Even if Vandy is just a stepping stone in his career you have to start as a head coach somewhere, right??

If you win at Vandy your a hero. If you lose its ok because no one really thought you were going to win anyway. If he goes there and his offense makes Vandy noticably better he'll get a promotion. In the meantime he's increased his salary 10 to 20 times over what he was making 5 years ago.

Plus, who knows what the future of Auburn is before this is all over. Add to that their offensive line is graduating and Newton's out of there, dude would be nuts not to take this offer.

Think Dan Mullen at Moo State. He's certainly parlayed that job into his name being mentioned for damn near every open HC position that comes available in the next few years (as long as he keeps up the momentum from this year).

Yes but its not apples and oranges. Mullen has a long college coaching career and spend 10+ years with Meyer. Malzahn was still coaching high school in 2005. And he had the run in with Nutt after that. Mullen will continue to get chances no matter what MState does. Newton leaves and they graduate their O-line the offense could go south for a year. Plus if they end up in the NCAA dog house, AGAIN, he could be off the radar for a while. This is his lottery ticket moment, he should cash it.
