Just wanted to welcome you guys to our message board - I'm a New Orleans native and longtime LSU fan but got my degree from Virginia. anyway this board is by far the most popular and most highly trafficked (and it's free): TheSabre.com - Baseball Message Board Home feel free to drop by for some baseball banter, but i'd wait until the celebration dies down a bit & the focus turns to LSU. note that it's the old style message board.. our fans like it better, but it can be annoying if you're not used to it. try not to mock as you can tell, our fans are pretty jubilant right now - the program has been very strong ever since O'Connor arrived from Notre Dame, with 6 straight NCAA appearances.. but this is the first year we finally got over several humps (won the ACC title, made it to a Super Regional, and made it to Omaha). We've got an extremely young team that was supposed to be a year or 2 away, so few of us expected this. Playing the preeminent college baseball program of the modern era in Omaha is a real honor.. i'm conflicted but pumped! PS - virginia fans refer to themselves as "wahoos" or "hoos"... hardly anybody uses Cavaliers.
Welcome to the board, do you care to give LSU fans a break down of your teams strengths and weaknesses. I have to admit I'm not familiar with the Virginia baseball program, but I'm glad to see you made it to the big show.
Brian O'Connor (BOC) coached teams have traditionally been small ball with good pitching. This team still has good pitching (3rd best ERA in the country) but is also the best hitting team BOC has fielded. Every starter but one is above .300 and the only player below that mark has been the most clutch hitter in post season. You should see Danny Hultzen who would have been a first round draft choice according to some experts if he hadn't made clear his decision to go to college. He ended up being drafted in the 10th round. He has a 90 mile an hour fastball, good slider and a 12-6 curve. Looking forward to the game---should be a good one! Edit: The team also is ecellent in the field and has 3-4 first team All-players. They've been excelling in the underdog role in recent weeks (haven't played at home since mid May)
Nor did I. I always knew them as the Cavaliers. I guess it's like people calling us the Bayou Bengals... Welcome Hoo fans!! I hope you all have a great time in Omaha... that is after your first game.
welcome hoos! short for wahoo's right?? anyhoo (see what i did there) any team that can get out of UCI's regional should not be taken lightly. arkansas is jelling and fullerton is probably the team to beat. we'll have a pretty tough side of the bracket. congrats on beating ole miss, so much for the best atmosphere in college baseball or whatever the announcer's said to make people not change the channel.
I am sure some of you guys knew this already, but for those that are not aware ... UVA's Coach Brian O'Connor was an assistant to Coach Paul Mainieri at Notre Dame --- I believe this should be an Advantage for LSU. Coaching styles may change, but (fill-in-the-blank): "At Notre Dame under head coach Paul Mainieri, O'Connor served as an assistant coach for the Fighting Irish from 1995-2001 before being promoted to associate head coach in 2001. He was named the 2001 National Assistant Coach of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and Baseball America, and was also named the AFLAC National Assistant Coach of the Year in 2003. O'Connor worked with the Fighting Irish's pitchers and also served as the program's recruiting coordinator." :tigereye:
fyi the term "wahoo" refers to the fish who can drink something like twice its bodyweight, so the term was used by students of another school to refer to uva students a while back but anyways........ i wasn't able to catch any of your series with rice, but it sounds like you have a very balanced team......you're #1 in the "real" poll (baseball america)...obviously, we're new to this...O'Connor has done an amazing job building a program in 6 years. how he has taken this team which only has 1 senior who actually plays much (and only like 2 juniors) to a place where no uva team has gone before is awesome. While it may seem like our fans and i are content with getting to rosenblatt, we want a championship bad. We know we can do it if we play our game......but the greatest thing is, that in the CWS, it's the top 8 teams in the country, so duh, anyone can win it with a great week.......thats why it sets up to be one hell of a week.....good luck this week, it's gonna be fun
