When is the last time that you met someone, they told you their name and you just randomly decided to call them something other than that? I can't think of a single instance in my life where this happened or I witnessed it happen. This whole thing is retarded. It's real simple: when someone tells you what their name is, call them that. Why does this need to be complicated? Why do we need a law for that? The law is stupid but so are the jackasses who do not want to call someone by the name that they answer to? You don't have to agree with their lifestyle, you don't even have to fucking like them but what is so wrong with calling someone by the name they claim?
Much ado about nothing. First as @Tiger in NC says anyone who has respect for treating people well will call others as they request. I go to one of the most conservative churches in Covington. There was a parishioner who went by 'Bill' till his wife passed away then started wearing dresses and went by 'Sally'. No one cared and called him Sally from then on. We still knew he was a Bill but polite society allows for this. This is not as frequent as the left and @Rex want you to believe. The percentage of the population that has these issues is vanishingly small. If an adult woman wants to use the men's room let her....unless she wants to pee standing up. Then she'd better clean her mess before she leaves. Also I bet most men who dress as women whatever they are want to be discreet and aren't wonems toilets all stalls? It's been happening for years...get over it. As for the perverts who do and will continue to use the ladies room the law will do nothing to stop or encourage their sick acts. Problem is idiots like this Weiner guy(and Rexie) want to create an issue to divide people rather than "protect" them. This is a useless law that serves no purpose except as a political stunt
Politicians like to create flashpoints, separate people, and then establish their base. It is so fucking easy to do.
Of course not but as @Winston1 said, in a polite society I don't understand why you wouldn't just call them what they want to be called. As I said, the law is stupid and unnecessary. On the flip side, why not just treat people the way you want to be treated? I have far more important things to worry about than what someone else wants to be called, or for that matter whether they want to put on their deceased wife's dresses and head off to church. We've gotten to the point where we can't even have common decency toward one another and tolerance is never a two way street.
It's so important they put it first in the bill of rights. Fire them ? Fine. Make it a crime ? That won't stand up to legal muster.
Jail fines for not using the "preferred" pronoun" That is quite a bit of ado for anyone who believes in the Constitution....IMO. And it's not just their name, it's basic pronouns. So if someone calls a patient "he" when the patient prefers "she", that's a possible 1 year in jail? W....T...F. We're talking about nursing homes here. Are you aware how much elder abuse goes on in nursing homes? They have one of the lowest levels of required care and training in the entire medical industry. Many are staffed with nothing more than LVN's or ward attendants. This is applicable to ANY employee at one of these facilities. The janitor could get fined $1k and put in jail. This isn't polite society we're talking about. It's about laws being enforced about what you should call people if you don't want to go to jail. I don't think a male nurse would go to jail for calling a female patient a Civilian Under Naval Training. Fired, sure but jailed? I don't know where you live, but out here in Cali, the LBGT lobby is not only frequent, they are vocal, demanding, disruptive, and insistent that they be not only accepted but liked. The federal government has laws to make sure men and women don't get treated differently. You can't have it both ways. I've tried my best to explain this but it's a lot more than just "get over it". I don't want to share the ladies room with a man, stall or no stall. I shouldn't have to. The ladies restroom is a place where you can let your guard down for a minute, talk about similar experiences, borrow a feminine item or any number of other things. A penis, whether it's in a dress or not, changes things. I don't expect you to understand, but it does. For the last several years, my daughter has gone to public restrooms without me. She isn't old enough to drive yet but since the law says she may have to share the bathroom with a man, that's not okay. I agree. I have no problem if a nursing home, government or private, has rules against this sort of thing and care givers should find another job. But fines and jail? Hell to the NO. And it might not stop there. What about business with SBA loans....will THEY be required to use preferred names and pronouns when conducting business?
