I went back to 1992 because that's when the two division thingy started and Arky joined.... Penn State joined the Big Ten in 1994... just trying to judge it on current teams... so 1992 or 1994 works for the most part. The 2001 season marked the start of the new century, so I often use it for current stuff.... the Big Ten and SEC have met 22 times sice then in bowl games.... we're both 11-11. Yep, it's damn hard to explain tOSU woes, but it hardly means the rest of the Big Ten "sucks".... as Michigan has done well, 3-0 this century and 5-1 since 1992 vbersus the SEC.... so I'm not sure how the Big Ten sucks in all this. And... everyone likes to blast away at Southern Cal... yet most everytime they play the Big Ten or the SEC.. or any other challenger for that matter, they win... and it usually ain't pretty.... so as long as the SEC avoids scheduling them, I guess it makes for great "what would happen if" stuff.... forgetting USC has played four games against the SEC this century and we all know what happened.
And what are we are supposed to do? Dump a rivalry that goes back to the 1920's because ND has hit a rough patch? The bigger point I tried to make was that we don't go out of our way to schedule the Troy's, North Texas's, and Appalachian St.'s of the football world (in the same season no less) like some SEC programs. Last year LSU* for instance also* played 8 home game out of 12 in the regular season. In fact we've gone out of our way to schedule some of the better programs in the country during PC's tenure. Against the SEC USC is 4-0 under PC by a combined score of 167-51. That's an average blowout of 42-13. *edit
USC winning vs the SEC Auburn in 2002 Auburn in 2003 Arkansas in 2005 Arkansas in 2006 LSU winning vs the Pac10 Arizona in 2003 Oregon in 2004 Arizona State in 2005 Arizona in 2006 LSU has played as many games versus the Pac-10 as SC has played versus the SEC, yet all we hear about is how the SEC won't play OOC games. Why? The fellatio-fest of Pete Carroll and the Trojans needs to end now before people actually start believing that B.S. like it's the truth. Year in and year out the SEC teams play more ranked opponents than any other conference. To try and divide them up into Conference and Out of Conference games is conjecture and an attempt to turn some meaningless scheduling anomaly into a sustainable point that proves something. What it does it divert attention away from the real issue: Quality Opponents regardless of conference affiliation.
Not at all. Tradition is what makes college football so great. I like the Tulane game getting added back to LSU's schedule because of the history, but you will never hear an LSU fan brag about beating Tulane like it's a worthy accomplishment. You can schedule all the OOC games you want, you still don't play as many ranked teams as SEC schools do year in and year out. "We beat Notre Dame! Fight on!" Congrats. You and Syracuse (3-9) now have something in common...
Will LSU schedule BOTH games and will LSU agree to come out West for the first game? The Rose Bowl Selection Committee is not USC. Until something changes, they will always select the teams from the Pac and the Big 10. It's all about the money.........just like it is in the SEC. It is noteworthy that some USC fans would like that to change and some are quite happy with tradition.
I don't think that is the issue. LSU is going to Washington for their first game next year. From what I hear, it is a matter of what year we travel. LSU does not like to travel for a tough OOC game in even years because the Auburn and Florida games are away those years. At least, that is what I have heard is the latest roadblock. It can just as easily be thrown back in USC's lap for insisting we come there first. It would be nice if both athletic departments would just make the respective fanbases happy and schedule it. I imagine it would get freakish ratings, which means $, and both schools love that stuff. Funny how this thread has derailed from the original discussion. Any of you even remember what it was??
